It is with sad hearts that we announce the death of George E. Moore, who passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the age of 67.
George died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.
George was born in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where he lived throughout his teen years.
He then attended Dartmouth College (B.A. 1968) and Temple Law School(J.D. 1976).
He has lived in the Philadelphia area since the early 1970s.
Since 1989, George served as University Counsel of Temple University and also as Secretary to the Board of Trustees since 1992.
Frances N. Mayo, 93, died Monday, March 3, 2014, in Austin, Texas, after several years of declining health.
She was born in Sportsburg Jan. 13, 1921, and lived her life in Punxsutawney.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Mayo. They operated Mayo's Market on Ridge Avenue for many years.
She was a loving wife, mother and friend and was happiest when helping others.
She enjoyed reading, singing in the church choir and dancing.
Connie Gresock, 81, Punxsutawney, died Monday, March 3, 2014, at her daughter Cindiâs home.
She was born on Jan. 21, 1933, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Gus Charles Whitman and Yvonne (Kubeldis) Whitman.
On July 10, 1954, she married William H. Gresock, who preceded her in death on May 22, 2003.
She was a member of the Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church of Punxsutawney.
She loved Bingo, cards, gambling, animals, reading books herself and reading books to her students.
John âPatâ Nadji, 66, Pifer Street, DuBois, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside in Pittsburgh.
Born March 16, 1947, in DuBois, he was the son of the late John & Genevieve (Duffalo) Nadji.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War.
On July 12, 1968, he married Rebecca âBeckyâ (Ball) Nadji. She survives.
After 30 years of service, he retired from the United Parcel Service (UPS).
He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church.
Rodney L. Miller, 60, Punxsutawney, died Monday, March 3, 2014, at home.
He was born Dec, 8, 1953, in Punxsutawney, the son of A. Leroy and Orpha E. (Yoas) Miller.
On Oct. 24, 1998, he married Darlene J. (Smith) Miller, who survives.
He attended the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Trade City.
He enjoyed tractors, guns, antiques, auctions and woodworking.
He was a vice president of the Rossiter Sportsmenâs Club and a lifetime member of the N.R.A.
He was the owner and operator of Rodney L. Miller Welding.
John Ardell "Curly" Shernock, 75, of Rochester Mills, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at his home.
Mr. Shernock was born July 7, 1938 in Kittanning, a son of the late George and Mildred (Bable) Shernock.
He is survived by his loving wife, Myrna S. (Williamson) Shernock, of Rochester Mills. They were married July 8, 1977.
He was a maintenance supervisor for Oneida Mines and a bus driver for the Marion Center School District before retirement.
He was also a member of the Moose No. 954 in Punxsutawney. He loved to garden and wash his cars.
Alma Bush, 68, of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Bush was born Aug. 28, 1945, in Timblin, a daughter of the late Austin and Della (Mogle) McDonald.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Bush Sr.
Alma was a member of the Church of the Nazerene in Punxsutawney.
She was an avid quilter and an excellent cook and baker. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Retired Lt. Col. Sharlene (VanDyke) Loennig, 61, of Punxsutawney, formerly of Aliquippa, passed away after brave, courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at home surrounded by her family and friends.
She was born Nov. 17, 1952, in Rochester, Pa., a daughter of Lena (Ceccarelli) VanDyke and the late James Merritt VanDyke.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Lucia and Nazzareno Ceccarelli, and her paternal grandparents, Josephine and Merritt Howard Van Dyke.
Charles K. Kovach, 95, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Kovach was born April 3, 1918, in Braddock, a son of the late John and Susann Kovach.
On April 17, 1943, he married his loving wife, Erlamon Doreen (Beatty) Kovach of Punxsutawney, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Panama Canal.
He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ.
Eugene âGeneâ Ermond Stear, 64, Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 27, 1949, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Ermond and Ellen Bair Stear.
He married Peg L. Hinderliter Stear in 1972. She preceded him in death in 1997.
Eugene is survived by a brother, Gary Stear and wife Donna of Ringgold; a nephew, Kevin Brestovich of Punxsutawney; and two nieces, Kim Stello of DuBois and Crystal Heckman of Punxsutawney.
