Master Gunnery Sergeant Richard Titus, 76

LEXINGTON, OHIO: Do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason. That simple principle became Richard Titus’ life compass as he honorably served his family, his country and his Marine Corps.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Richard Titus passed away Wednesday morning, July 30, 2014, in OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield (Ohio) Hospital. He was 76.

Born Richard Allen Titus on July 11, 1938, in Kane, to Gregg and Margaret (Miller) Titus, he graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1956.

Irene (Cukanna) Smee, 92

Irene (Cukanna) Smee, 92, of Harrisburg, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014, in the Harrisburg Hospital.

She was born May 22, 1922, in Punxsutawney; the daughter of Frank and Rose (Hvavka) Cukanna.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Joseph Smee Jr; her son, Joseph Richard Smee of Blue Bell, Pa.; her daughter, Judy Jacobs of Orlando, Florida; six grandsons, Jason Smee, Christopher Smee, Joshua Smee, Ryan Jacobs, Bradley Jacobs and Matt Jacobs; and her sister, Sue Morris of Sykesville.

Janet A. Schiafone, 73

Janet A. Schiafone, 73, of Euclid Ave. Brookville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa.

The daughter of William Hart Commons and Elizabeth Taylor Commons, Janet was born on Oct. 14, 1940, in Barnesboro, Pa.

On May 20, 2000, she married William Joseph Schiafone Sr., who survives, in Brookville.

She worked as a custodian for the Brookville Area School District for more than 25 years.

Dominick G. “Mickey” Bettino, 86, of Niagara Falls, New York, died on July 30, 2014.

Beloved husband of the late Rosemary (nee Yenzi) Bettino; devoted father of Annemarie C. Bettino, Thomas D. (Karen) Bettino and Yvonne (John) Adams; loving son of the late Dominick and Antoinette (nee Cicero) Bettino; dear brother of the late Albert Bettino, Stanley Bettino, Christine LaSalle, Lee Bettino, Michelina "Kelly" Reele, Ambrose Bettino, Giovanni Bettino and John Bettino; Dominick is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jacqueline “Jacki” Young, 69

Jacqueline “Jacki” Young, 69, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at home.

She was born April 1, 1945, in New Castle, England, a daughter of David L. and Gladys (Foster) Grove.

On June 28, 1986, in St. Louis, she married Robert E. Young, who survives.

She attended the First Assembly of God Church in Walston.

She enjoyed traveling, church, hiking, camping and her family.

She retired as a senior sales representative for CNA Insurance Co. She then went on to become a real estate agent.

Steven John Schopperth, 47

Steven John Schopperth, 47, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born June 24, 1967, in Bloomingdale, New Jersey, the son of the late Timothy and Joan (Degelman) Schopperth.

He was a mechanic.

He was married to Paula (Harkleroad) Schopperth, who survives.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Steven J. Schopperth of Punxsutawney; two daughters, Katlyn Schopperth and Ashley Freeman of New Jersey; one sister, Karen Diorio of Las Vegas, Nevada; and one brother, Timothy Schopperty of Hawthorn, New York.

Raymond Joseph DeFoor, 69

Raymond Joseph DeFoor, 69, of Cambridge, Ohio, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 12, 1944, in Youngstown, and was the son of the late Albert Eugene and Bessie Mae (Hobba) DeFoor.

Mr. DeFoor retired in 1992 from GTE after 30 years of service.

He was a 1963 graduate of Punxsutawney High School and a member of Center United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Robert Ananea.

Frona D. Burkett, 88

Frona D. Burkett, 88, of DuBois, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014, at DuBois Nursing Home.

Mrs. Burkett was born May 26, 1926, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late David L. Buterbaugh and Jessie D. (Clawson) Buterbaugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joy James Burkett, on April 15, 1985.

Frona was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Sykesville.

Tonjia Renee Testut, 35

Tonjia Renee Testut, 35, of Punxsutawney, died Thursday, July 24, 2014, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born July 2, 1979, in Punxsutawney, the daughter of the late Alexander and Linda (Harmon) Testut.

She was a nurse.

She is survived by her fiancé, Darryl Asburay; three sons, Jacob Asburay, Zachary Asburay and Tyler Asburay, all of Punxsutawney; and by two brothers, Richard Testut and wife Annette, and Dan Testut and wife Toni.

Joseph Dynako, 87

Joseph Dynako, 87, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, July 24, 2014, at Penn Highlands Brookville.

He was born Feb. 12, 1927, in NuMine, a son of the late John and Josephine (Zak) Dynako.

On May 1, 1948, he married Irene D. “Renie” (Sovich) Dynako, who preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1995.

He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church of Punxsutawney.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, having served during World War II.

Joseph was the owner and operator of Television Service Center in Punxsutawney.
