Betty Jane Brown, 69

Betty Jane Brown, 69, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014 at home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Feb. 7, 1945, in Salisburg, Pa., the daughter of the late Donald L. and Beulah (Paulhamas) Roupp.

She married Ronald Brown, who survives, on June 16, 1962.

She was a homemaker.

Edna May Summerville, 90

Edna May Summerville, 90, of Hazen went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014.

She was born in 1924 to William J. and Helen (Bullers) Vasbinder in Hazen.

Edna was a member of the Hazen United Methodist Church, where she took the responsibility of church pianist at the age of 12 and retired at the age of 70 as the organist.

She was proud to be a lifelong resident of Hazen. Edna graduated from Brookville High School in 1942 and the DuBois Business College.

Peter David John Medley, 60

October 6, 2014

Peter David John Medley, 60, of Greensburg, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg.

He was born Sept. 8, 1954, in Melbourne, Australia, the son of the late David and Ruth (Crane) Medley.

He had been employed by NASA. He was a member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greensburg, and was a veteran of the Air Force.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Christina Medley.

Frank A. Palmerino, 75

Punxsutawney native Frank A. Palmerino, 75, of Riverside, California, passed away on Sept. 28, 2014 in Riverside, California.

He was the son of Frank and Jessie (Carlino) Palmerino.

He is survived by his companion of 43 years, Ted McKinney of Riverside, California; three sisters, Adelaide Palmerino, Roseanne Fallara and Lucy Ivens, all of Punxsutawney; and two brothers, James Palmerino and Alfred Palmerino of Fremont, California.

Ida Catherine Doverspike Wolfgang, 90

October 2, 2014

Ida Catherine Doverspike Wolfgang, 90, died on Sept. 27, 2014, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Maryland. 

Born May 31, 1924, in Mt. Tabor, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Russell Doverspike and Martha Smith Doverspike.

On May 24, 1947, Ida married Jay R. Wolfgang. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2005.

She lived in Carmichaels, Pa., from 1950 on and moved to Ringgold in 1978, where she lived until 2011, when she became a resident of St. Mary’s Nursing Center.

James A. Johns, 34

James A. Johns, 34, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, at Penn Highlands Health Care in DuBois.

Born June 10, 1980, James was the son of Howard E. Johns and Janice F. (Campbell) Barrett. They survive.

Formerly, James worked in a pressed metal factory. He enjoyed mechanical work, computers and fixing trucks. He was a member of Cowboy Church in Florida.

James R Shirley, 96

James R Shirley, 96, originally of Punxsutawney, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Born on Nov. 26, 1917, he was the son of the late Roy E. and Bertha N. (Long) Shirley.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Virginia Ruth Shirley; one son, Donald R. Shirley and wife Patricia of Palm Harbor, Florida; one daughter, Sandra J. Nungester and husband Don of Spring, Texas; and one niece, Karen Harshman of Punxsutawney.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees, having served in World War II.

Burton E. Harrold, 87

Burton E. Harrold, 87, of Warren, died Monday evening, Sept. 29, 2014, at St. Joseph Health Center. He was born Feb. 15, 1927, in Punxsutawney, the son of the late Burt Edward and Hazel Mae Horner Harrold. He and his wife, Ruby, have been Warren residents since 1959, coming from Latrobe, Pa.

Stephen T. Gomola, 81

Stephen T. Gomola, 81, of Reynoldsville, passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Gomola was born April 29, 1933, in DeLancey, the youngest son of the late Steve and Mary (Sivanich) Gomola.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Dolores A. (Molnar) Gomola.

Mr. Gomola was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he was a Captain.

He was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Church.

Ellen L. Kerr, 95

Ellen L. Kerr, 95, Punxsutawney, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born June 30, 1919, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Jesse and Nettie (Maurer) Snyder.

In 1938, she married Oliver C. Kerr, who preceded her in death in April of 1960.

She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Punxsutawney, where she served as a deaconess and choir member and taught Sunday School for many years.

She enjoyed cooking and baking, being active within her church, playing piano and spending time with family.
