N. Duene (Bullock) Bowser, 86

October 16, 2011

Nellie Duene (Bullock) Bowser, 86, Indiana, formerly of Dayton, went to be with her Lord Oct. 13, 2011, at St. Andrew’s Village, Indiana.

She was born June 28, 1925, in Timblin, a daughter of the late Asa and Nellie (Firemen) Bullock.

A war bride, she married Harry Laird Bowser Nov. 28, 1942. He preceded her in death July 18, 2007.

She graduated from Dayton High School in 1943.

Mrs. Bowser worked in the Dayton Elementary School cafeteria for many years, retiring in 1988. In honor of her service to the students and staff, the elementary yearbook was dedicated to her.

Betty Jean Stahlman, 91

Betty Jean Stahlman, 91, New Bethlehem, died Friday Oct. 14, 2011, at Brookville Hospital.

She was born June 3, 1920, in Limestone Township, Clarion County, a daughter of the late James Orr and Elva Mae (Showers) Collett.

July 31, 1937, she married Darrell Charles Stahlman, who preceded her in death July 10, 1971.

Mrs. Stahlman, along with her family, owned and operated the family business, B.J. Stahlman Trucking in New Bethlehem.

She was a member of the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and a former member of the BPW. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.

John A. Welder, 73

John A. Welder, 73, DuBois, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Stump Creek, the son of the late Joseph Welder and Helen Frantz.

July 6, 1968, he married Lillian (Tschopp) Welder, who survives.

Mr. Welder was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in Vietnam.

He worked at Riverside-BiLo in DuBois and the former Country Garden Market for many years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He especially liked to work on vehicles.

Velma Jean Sarvey, 74

Velma Jean Sarvey, 74, Brookville, formerly of Summerville, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at Brookville Hospital.

She was born Aug. 21, 1937, in Summerville, a daughter of the late Berge Olan and Edith Ellan (Hughes) Ishman.

She was married to Richard C. Sarvey, who preceded her in death Jan. 19, 1983.

Mrs. Sarvey worked as a waitress for Truckstops of America in Brookville for more than 22 years.

Elmer E. Gromley Sr., 96

Elmer E. Gromley Sr., 96, Burnside, passed away Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at his home.

He was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Glen Campbell, a son of the late Obadiah and Lula Jane (Walker)

April 16, 1946, he married Trudell (Bingaman) Gromley, who preceded him in death April 17, 2011, after 65 years of marriage.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater as a staff sergeant, serving with with the 37th Division 129th Infantry Regiment.

Forrest “Corky” John Hawk, 94

Forrest “Corky” John Hawk, 94, of Canoe Ridge, Indiana County, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at his daughter’s home in Canoe Ridge.

He was born Dec. 23, 1916, in Canoe Ridge, a son of George and Velma (Smith) Hawk.

Oct. 3, 1940, he married the former B. LaRue “Toots” (Mumau) Hawk, who preceded him in death April 6, 1979, after almost 39 years of marriage.

The majority of Mr. Hawk’s career was spent as a carpenter. He was a life member of the Local Carpenter’s Union based in Buffalo, N.Y., and retired in 1979 as a shop supervisor with Hadley’s Exhibits in Buffalo.

Dennis D. Hook

Dennis D. Hook, Brooksville, Fla., passed away Sept. 19, 2011.

He was born in Spangler and was a 1966 graduate of Purchase Line High School.

Mr. Hook moved to Syracuse, N.Y., where he spent most of his life. He worked for P&C Foods as a truck driver, accumulating more than 1.5 million safe driving miles. He also received New York State Safe Driver of the Year awards.

He retired after 34 years with the Teamsters Local No. 317, then moved to Florida where he wanted to retire for a while. He also worked for Autoway-Ford of Brooksville for four years.

James I. Lewis

James I. Lewis,  82, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 14, 1928, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late John and May (Airgood) Lewis.

He was a member of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Lewis owned a convenience store in Cloe in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.

His hobbies were fishing and hunting.

Surviving relatives include a brother, Garland Lewis and wife Maria; a sister, Donna May Wells; and nieces and nephews.

Frances V. Pape Stojek, 83

Frances V. Pape Stojek, 83, DuBois, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

She was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Louis and Anna (Galletta) Pape.

Sept. 16, 1948, she married Albert "Snuffy" Stojek, who preceded her in death May 29, 1970.

Mrs. Stojek graduated from SS. Cosmas and Damian High School in Punxsutawney in 1946.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Reynoldsville and a former member of S.S. Cosmas and Damian Church in Punxsutawney and St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in DuBois.

Anthony Test, 89

Anthony Test, 89, Punxsutawney, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at UMPC-Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born June 25, 1922, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late John P. and Frances (DelPrincipe) Test.

April 24, 1948, he married Grace E. (Motter) Test, who survives, of Punxsutawney.

Mr. Test was the former owner of the Matterhorn Co. in Punxsutawney.
A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Army as a private first class. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Test was a member of SS. Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church, Punxsutawney.
