E. Eugene "Gene" Kauffman, 80

March 27, 2012

E. Eugene "Gene" Kauffman, 80, Punxsutawney, passed away Monday, March 26, 2012, at his home.

He was born June 21, 1931, in Mahaffey, a son of the late H. Clayton and Catherine Mae (Lee) Kauffman.

He was married to Eleanor May (Smith) Kauffman, who survives, of Punxsutawney.

Mr. Kauffman was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War and 31 years in the National Guard.

He was retired from Season-All Industries and later worked part-time for CRW Home Supply, where he had many friends.

Keith Mervin Winters, 55

Keith Mervin Winters, 55, Rossiter, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Hillsdale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born July 31, 1956, a son of Mervin Winters, who survives, and the late Dolly (Miller) Winters.

He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Rossiter.

Mr. Winters enjoyed drawing and listening to country music, and he worked at the Indiana County Workshop.

James T. Lockard, 85

James T. Lockard, 85, Brookville, died Friday, March 23, 2012, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

He was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Montgomery Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Thomas Nelson and Alice (Sturgeon) Lockard.

Aug. 26, 1950, he married Marion "Mimi" Smith, who preceded him in death Feb. 6, 2012.

Mr. Lockard worked as a roofer and a carpenter.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper for the 472nd Glider BN in the Pacific Theater.

Ruby Tyger, 80

Ruby Tyger, 80, Rochester Mills, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born April 20, 1931, in Leechburg, Armstrong County, a daughter of the late Leroy and Frances (Boyer) Wagner.

Dec. 27, 1952, she married Harold C. Tyger, who preceded her in death.

Agness Maxine Schaper, 90

March 23, 2012

Agness Maxine Schaper moved on from this life Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at the age of 90. 

She was a resident of Hilmar, Calif., when she passed away, but had lived in many places in California after being discharged from the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. 

She was born in February 1922 and raised in Punxsutawney by her parents, Zelda Rae and Thomas Otto Enterline.

Maxine, as she was affectionately known to all, spent her life as a nurse; first as a Navy nurse, then working in different doctors' offices and later specializing in obstetrics.

Ruth M. Lloyd, 83

Ruth M. Lloyd, 83, Dayton, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at the Armstrong County Health Center.

She was born Nov. 28, 1928, in Redbank Township, Armstrong County, the daughter of the late Isaac Edward and Lillian (Barnette) Beck.

Mrs. Lloyd was a lifetime resident of the area and was a member of Milton Church. She was also active with the Dayton Senior Citizens' Center.

Dr. George Sabarich, 87

Dr. George Sabarich, 87, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at home.

He was born May 21, 1924, in the Sykesville area mining town of Cascade, a son of Croatian immigrants, the late Nik and Antonija (Godinic) Sabaric.

An industrious person since youth, Dr. Sabarich owned his own Atlantic gas station in Sykesville, while still attending high school.

His Sykesville High graduation was followed by employment in Niagara Falls.

He served in the U.S. Navy “SeaBees” in New Guinea during World War II.

Gerald William “Bill” Barnett, 87

March 21, 2012

Gerald William “Bill” Barnett, 87, of the Stanton area, Brookville, died Tuesday, March 21, 2012, at McKinley Health Center.

He was born May 12, 1924, in New Bethlehem, a son of the late Merle Blair and Blanche Laura (Cathcart) Barnett.

Sept. 16, 1949, he married the former Bertha “Jean” Kennedy, who survives. They enjoyed 62 years of good marriage.

Mr. Barnett was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, in the 104th Infantry division.

He worked as a truck driver at Reed Milling for more than 37 years, delivering feed to many area farmers.

Lucy R. Stefanelli, 87

Lucy R. Stefanelli, 87, Indiana, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Latrobe.

She was born in 1924 in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Felice and Giovanna (Manacchio) Ciccone.

Mrs. Stefanelli was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux R.C. Church, Indiana, and the Catholic Daughters of America.

During World War II, she worked for Federal Lab making shells and flares, while awaiting the return of her soldier fiancé, Angelo Stefanelli. Following the war, they were married Jan. 24, 1946, and shared 61 years together until his death in 2007.

Helen Shaffer Freeman, 83

March 20, 2012

Helen Shaffer Freeman, 83, of Savannah, Ga., died Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2012, at Shadowmoss Plantation under the care of Odyssey Hospice in Savannah.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Haven and Gladys (Kougher) Shaffer.

Ms. Freeman was a former member of Epworth United Methodist Church and was a retired beautician.

She was an accomplished artist who taught painting at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
