Ruth S. Elkin, 93, of Dayton, Pa., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 5, 1919, in East Mahoning Township, Indiana County, the daughter of Blair R. and Nannie L. (Lockhart) Streams.
Ruth was a resident of Dayton since 1967 and graduated from Marion Center High School in 1937.
She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the Indiana State Teachers College in 1941 and began her teaching career at South Mahoning Township Schools.
February 26th
James E. Martz, 98, Ringgold, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Brookville Hospital.
He was born June 30, 1914, in Ringgold, a son of the late Jesse and Catherine (Young) Martz.
On May 17, 1939, he married Faye (Young) Martz, who survives.
He was a lifetime member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Ringgold.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a teacher and assistant principal of the Punxsutawney Area School District and then became principal of the school district.
Harry R. Gaul, 83, DuBois, formerly of Route 410, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at DuBois Nursing Home, following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 24, 1929, in Big Run, a son of the late Ivan Gaul and Elizabeth (Fye) Gaul.
He married Carrie E. (Henry) Gaul, who preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 2005.
Mr. Gaul was a graduate of Plum High School.
He worked for various dairy companies.
He was a musician, playing for many area functions.
He resided in Plum Borough for many years.
Robert Dean Hetrick, 55, of Altoona, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, in Blair County.
He was born March 15, 1957, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Robert Lee Hetrick and Winona M. (London) Hetrick.
His mother survives and resides in Punxsutawney.
He served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam era.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters, LeeAnn Hetrick and Linda Kerns Stanford and husband Steve, all of Punxsutawney; and a brother, Barry Hetrick and wife Kimberly of Punxsutawney.
Dora Lynn Sherry, 46, of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at
Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born April 16, 1966, in New Castle, a daughter of Clarence E. Brown and the late Dr. Mattie Arnell Brown.
On April 25, 1987, she married Arthur Sherry. He survives.
She was a gentle, kind-spirited woman.
Dora was very artistic, and she enjoyed painting, drawing and graphic arts.
She was very good at working on computers.
February 25th
Wilber Boyd Bair, 85, of Rossiter, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born Feb. 25, 1927, in Banks Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Lemon Clair and Sarah Jane (Pearce) Bair.
He was a member of the United States Army, serving during World War II, where he earned the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
On Dec. 23, 1950, he married the former Margaret Ruth Wilt. She preceded him in death on Aug. 30, 2007.
Mr. Bair attended the First Church of God.
February 24th
Joann Virginia Kunkle Jeffries, 70, of Home, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
A daughter of Lyle W. and Virginia Bracken Kunkle, she was born Dec. 17, 1942, in Indiana.
Mrs. Jeffries was a graduate of Marion Center High School.
Joann was a caregiver and also a van driver for Indian Haven.
She was an animal lover and enjoyed gardening, yard work and all outdoor activities.
Joann was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Melvin Shepler, 83, of Industry, Pa., passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2013, with his family at his side.
He was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Henderson Township, Pa., a son of Homer and Leila Pearl Shepler.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War in the Atlantic Fleet aboard the USS New Kent PA-217.
He was an electrician with Pittsburgh Tube Mill for 32 years and was a member of Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and youth leader.
He was also a Little League coach and Boy Scout leader.
Wilbur Bair, 85, of Rossiter, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
February 21st
Mrs. Abigail “Gayle” Anderson, 90, of Lake Wales, Florida, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at her home.
She was born June 1, 1922, in Marion Center, Pa., and married her husband, Emory A. Anderson, Sr., on Dec. 19, 1941.
They lived in Lake Wales from 1957 until 1964 and returned to Lake Wales from Punxsutawney in 1986.
She was a loving wife and mother and a beautiful example of love and caring for her family.
She was a bookkeeper and a secretary alongside her late husband in their
family-owned businesses.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Lake Wales Woman’s Club.
