Raymond Richard Barrineau, 55

Raymond Richard Barrineau, 55, of Rochester Mills, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Family Hospice and Palliative Care in Pittsburgh.

He was born on July 15, 1958, in Audubon, New Jersey, a son of Richard Eugene Barrineau of Jacksonville, Florida, and Henrietta "Honey"(Blankenship) Wolfe and husband Harry of Rochester Mills.

On Nov. 27, 1986, he married Elizabeth Ann Albertson. She survives and resides in Rochester Mills.

Byrtha L. “Byrt” Smathers, 95

Byrtha L. “Byrt” Smathers, 95, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Penn Highlands Healthcare, DuBois.

She was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Olie and Gillen (Bastine) Amundson.

She married W. William “Bill” Smathers, on March 22, 1951. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1994.

She was the first manager of the Mahoning Towers for 23 years and retired from there at the age of 83.

She managed the YMCA and will be remembered for organizing the YAR dances in the early ‘70s.

Alice Mae Zipfel Kahle, 99

June 18, 2014

Alice Mae Zipfel Kahle, 99, a guest at Jefferson Manor in Brookville, formerly of Sigel, Pa., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Brookville Hospital.

The daughter of Albert M. Zipfel and Elizabeth Mae Brenneman Ziphel, she was born on June 24, 1914, in Brookville.

In September of 1937 in Strattanville, Pa., she married James Lon Kahle, who preceded her in death in 1976.

Louise Oberlin, 99

June 17, 2014

Helen “Louise” Oberlin, 99, formerly of Rochester Mills, Pa., died on Monday, June 16, 2014, at St. Andrews Village in Indiana.

The daughter of Clair and Ethel (Sebring) Burkett, she was born on Nov. 25, 1914, in Grant Township, Indiana County.

She graduated from Indiana High School in Indiana, in the Class of 1931.

Louise was a member of the Rockbridge Presbyterian Church in Rochester Mills, Pa., where she sang in the choir for many years.

During her younger years, she played the piano, the organ and the violin.

Lois C. Huffman, 80

June 16, 2014

Lois C. Huffman, 80, of Juneau, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Huffman was born June 15, 1934, in Falls Creek, a daughter of the late Albert B. and Margaret (Jones) Chittester.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ben Lee Huffman, of Juneau.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney.

Lois worked as an operator for Bell Telephone before retirement, where she was a member of the Pioneers Club.

She was a member of the Pine Street Senior Center and Brockwayville Depot.

Ruth Organ, 98

June 15, 2014

Ruth Organ, 98, of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, at
Laurelbrooke Landing in Brookville.

She was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Sugarhill, Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Jay Merton and Florence Eleanor (Blight) Steele.

On April 22, 1938, she married James Alexander Organ III, who preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1992.

Ruth was a member of the St. Peters United Church of Christ for 70 years.

Mrs. Organ and her husband, Jim, founded Bells Mills Trading Post, Inc., which pioneered propane gas business in Jefferson County.

Jack Robert Kromer, 84

Jack Robert Kromer, 84, of Covode, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, at home.

He was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Daniel and Isabella (Nichols) Kromer.

Mr. Kromer was a United States Army veteran, having served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam prior to his retirement.

On Oct. 12, 1950, he married the former Anna Isabelle Engle. She survives.

After retirement, he started an auto repair garage, where he enjoyed working on cars, tractors and mowers.

He enjoyed watching and feeding wildlife around his home.

Robert Lee Coulter, 62

Robert Lee Coulter, 62, of Coolspring, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, at home.

He was born Aug. 6, 1951, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late William Wayne and Frances Lucille (Burkett) Coulter.

Mr. Coulter served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

On Oct. 15, 1983, he married Robin Dianne Ishman. She survives.

Bob worked as a foreman for Penn Line Service, Inc.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting.

His grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Roby Junior Grose, 83

June 13, 2014

Roby Junior Grose, 83, of Big Run, died Friday, June 13, 2014, at home.

He was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Crumpler, West Virginia, the son of the late Roby and Kathleen Letha (Hager) Grose.

He was Protestant by faith.

On June 6, 1953, he married Ruby Jean London. She preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 1986.

He then married Sharon Leone (Bausch) Derise on May 26, 1990. She survives.

Mr. Grose previously worked as the Jefferson County Conservation District manager; he was also a New York Life Insurance agent, but at heart, he was a dairy and beef farmer.

Robert W. Mayes, 69

June 10, 2014

Robert W. Mayes, 69, passed away on May 30, 2014, at Good Shepherd Hospice from his battle with cancer.

Born in Punxsutawney in 1944, he moved to Lakeland in 1986, where he worked as a heavy machinery mechanic and retired from FME.

After retiring, he took up gardening and created a beautiful landscape paradise where many have gathered to enjoy its beauty.

His other love was golf. He enjoyed playing with his buddies at Cleveland Heights Golf Course.

He was of the Baptist faith.
