Hazel B. Yeager, 94

Hazel B. Yeager, 94, a 70-year resident of New Bethlehem, died early
Monday morning, July 21, 2014.

Born Dec. 6, 1919, in Worthville, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Paul and Dollie (Geist) Nolf.

She married Walter L. Yeager on June 27, 1940. He preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2000.

Hazel worked as a cashier at the A&P Store and Comet Market.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Bethlehem. 

Hazel enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She was a caring person who liked doing things for others.

Samuel J. States, 77

Samuel J. States, 77, of Punxsutawney, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.

A son of the late Charles and Alma (Filler) States, he was born on Oct. 11, 1936, in Punxsutawney.

On March 20, 1965, he married Joy (Bell) States, who survives.

Samuel was a graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and traveled to ports worldwide. He managed the kitchen on the ship and brought his culinary skills to good use throughout his life, especially through coordinating many dinners at his beloved church.

John Matthew Piszker, Jr., 72

John Matthew Piszker, Jr., 72, of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at home with his family.

He was born March 26, 1942, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late John Matthew Piszker, Sr. and Thelda Louise (McQuown) Piszker.

He was Catholic by faith.

Mr. Piszker was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served on the USS Independence during the Vietnam War.

On Dec. 11, 1965, he married the former Mary Ellen Depue. She survives and resides in Punxsutawney.

John worked as a service manager at Stockdale Mine Supply until his retirement after 39 years.

Brian James “Peazle” Himes, 53

Brian James “Peazle” Himes, 53, of Punxsutawney, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Himes was born March 2, 1961, in Punxsutawney, a son of the the late James D. Himes and his mother, Maxine L. (Minick) Himes of Punxsutawney, who survives.

Brian was a heavy equipment operator for McDonald & Owen Lumber of Brookville.

He was a member of the Punxsutawney Eagles, and he loved bowling, playing pool, riding his motorcycle, cars, racing and long walks in the outdoors.

George Day, Jr., 82

George Day, Jr., 82, of Reynoldsville, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at Christ the King Manor.

He was born March 7, 1932, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late George Day, Sr., and Laura (Smith) Day.

Mr. Day was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War.

On Nov. 22, 1951, he married the former Patricia Ann Welton. She survives and resides in Reynoldsville.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reynoldsville.

George worked for McDowell and Jackson China and also farmed. He and his wife owned and operated a greenhouse for many years.
