Robert âBobâ Jay Melzer, Jr. was escorted into Heaven by angels on Aug. 30, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was 74 years old.
He was born in the Wayne Hotel, Desire, Pa., on Sept, 17, 1938, to Robert âJayâ Melzer and Josephine (Jackson) Melzer.
In 1959, Bob married his best friend and the love of his life, Nancy (Keenan) Melzer, in Sykesville, Pa., and they built a home and started a family in Desire, Pa.
They welcomed 4 children â Bobbi, Elizabeth, Susan and Doug.
Phyllis Theresa Himes, 87, of Punxsutawney, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Mulberry Square, where she had been a resident for the past four years.
She was surrounded by family and friends.
Phyllis was born June 4, 1926, in DeLancey, Pa.
She was the daughter of the late Cataldo and Theresa D. (Garvey) Scarantine.
Her father immigrated from Italy in 1899.
On Nov. 10, 1945, she married Reed M. Himes, who preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2001.
J. Kipp Lukehart, 67, Punxsutawney, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at home.
He was born Dec. 27, 1945, in Punxsutawney, the son of the late Joseph M. and Jeanne (Bidwell) Lukehart.
On Aug. 27, 1966, he married Sharyn M. âShugâ McLaughlin, who survives.
He was a member of the Weber Club, Corn Cob Club, the Punxsutawney Country Club and the Jefferson County BAR Association. He was also a former district attorney for Jefferson County.
Quay E. States, 90, of Berlin Center, Ohio, formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Humility House Nursing Home in Austintown, Ohio.
Mr. States was born July 6, 1923, in Juneau, a son of the late Albert and Violet (Gaston) States.
He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" States.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Carol Champion of Chandler,
Ariz., and Donna Cook of N. Jackson, Ohio; two brothers, Jack
Joan Pearce, 73, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born Oct. 19, 1939, in Rossiter, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Elva N. (McCarty) Mallory.
On Sept. 21, 1958, she married Harvey L. Pearce, who survives.
She was a member of the Steffy United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed bingo, her family, auctions, sewing, baking and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a former employee of Wal-Mart.
James C. Young, 92, formerly of New Bethlehem and North Freedom, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at the Brookville Hospital.
He was born on May 3, 1921, in Mayport, the son of Charles and Lucy (Hetrick) Young.
He was first married to Ruby (Brocious), and she preceded him in death in 1985. He then married Evelyn (Schreckengost) Snyder, and she preceded him in death in 2010.
During his lifetime, Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church in North Freedom and Leasure Run.
Florence Jennie Cooper, age 91, of Sagamore, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at the home of her son in Richmond, Va.
She was born in 1921 to John Reid and Bertha Dell Aul McCausland in Armstrong County.
Mrs. Cooper was a member of the Sagamore Community Bible Church.
She was a lifelong resident of Sagamore and was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and watching TV.
Dorothy Henrietta Lewis, 91, of Marion Center, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Indian Haven, in Indiana, Pa.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1921, to Ramey W. and Charlett E. (Harrold) Marshall in Punxsutawney.
Dorothy worked as a homemaker, farmer and seamstress in Punxy for 25 years.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Doris (Sis) Wells/Hayes of Home; her son, Ramey E. (Carole) Lewis of Marion Center; four
Bette E. Wallwork, affectionately known as âMoggieâ, 92, of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at home.
She was born June 28, 1921, in Adrian Township, Armstrong County, a
daughter of the late Amos and Ivy (Tarr) Croyle.
She was first married to John W. Meanor on July 31, 1937. He preceded her in death on July 12, 2000.
Her second marriage was to George Wallwork on June 5, 1982. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 2000.
She was a manager on the second floor at Montgomery Ward from 1966-1976 and also worked as a fiscal secretary at Jefferson Manor.
Mary Christine Curtis Carnazzo, 76, entered into eternal peace at Castle Memorial Hospital, Kailua, Hawaii, seven days shy of her 77th birthday.
Mary was born Aug. 15, 1936, on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.
Mary graduated from Ss. Cosmas and Damian in 1954 and remained a faithful supporter of SS.C.D. throughout the rest of her life.
After graduating from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh in 1957, she moved to California, with five of her nursing school buddies, and worked at Los Angeles County Hospital.
