Thomas "Shiner" Doyle Snyder, Sr., 62, of Mayport, Pa., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital, with his loving family at his side.
He was born March 27, 1951, in Brookville, the son of the late Howard "Snitz" Doyle Snyder and Sarah Josephine Caylor.
He was a member of the National Guard and worked as a coal miner and truck driver.
He was also the owner of the Thomas Snyder Coal Company.
Norman Samuel Scava, 85, of Hudson, Ohio, was taken home on Aug. 17, 2013, to join his wife, Doris, for eternity.
Sam was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Punxsutawney, the son of the late LuCille and Samuel Scava.
He was married to Doris Foster, who preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2011.
Sam was known as "Skip" to his friends.
He attended Punxsutawney High School, where he was a four-sport athlete. Upon graduation, he attended Thiel College, where he met his wife, Doris.
Richard A. Srock, Jr., 63, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Richard was preceded in death by parents Richard, Sr. and Leah Margaret (Knarr) Srock of Troutville.
Born in DuBois on June 9, 1950, Richard grew up in Troutville and graduated from DuBois Area High School in 1968.
Richard lived with his parents until moving to Pittsburgh, where he brought great joy to the homes of his sisters Mary Maddox and Diane Davis until moving to Brick House at the campus of Allegheny Valley School in Coraopolis, Pa. in 2004.
Alfred J. "Pete" Manners, 94, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Benezette, died on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, following a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 28, 1918, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late William and Jessie Manners.
On May 19, 1948, in Punxsutawney, he married Ann Swanson Manners, who survives.
Pete was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII in Normandy and France.Â He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the war.Â He retired from Airco Speer after more than 29 years of service.Â
Robert Wayne Dinger, 68, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Punxsutawney, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 31, 2013, in Sarasota, following a lengthy illness.
Wayne, as he was known to all, was born in Punxsutawney on March 28, 1945, the son of Ervin and Mary Dinger.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Toale Brothers Funeral Home of Sarasota.
A full military burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Sarasota National Cemetery, located at 9810 State Highway 72, Sarasota, Fla.
Keith "Kip" Duane Snyder, Sr., 86, of Punxsutawney, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Shadyside Hospital, with his family by his side.
Keith was born Jan. 6, 1927, in Timblin, a son of the late Elvin Sidney and Agnes Mae (Engle) Snyder.
He was a graduate of the class of 1943 at Punxsutawney High School.
He then attended California State Teachersâ€™ College until his commencement in 1947.
Mr. Snyder served in the United States Navy during World War II.
On Dec. 26, 1949, he married Lois Romayne Martz. She preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 1974.
Danis Sheryl "Sherry" Rager, 61, of Rossiter, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital.
Sherry was born on Sept, 20, 1951, in Niagra Falls, New York, a daughter of the late Thomas Edward Beck, Sr. and DeMaris Loretta (Cessna) Beck.
On July 21, 2007, she married George R. Rager. He survives.
She enjoyed dancing, baking, needlework and being with friends.
Genevieve R. Haverilla, 90, Rossiter, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born July 15, 1923, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Angelo and Daily (Coretti) Ferrara.
On Sept. 21, 1946, she married Henry J. Haverilla, who preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1988.
She was a study hall monitor at Punxsutawney High School from 1963 to 1971; she then founded the Haverilla Personal Care Home, where she continued to work until this past week.
She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Rossiter.
Robert â€śBobâ€ť Jay Melzer, Jr. was escorted into Heaven by angels on Aug. 30, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was 74 years old.
He was born in the Wayne Hotel, Desire, Pa., on Sept, 17, 1938, to Robert â€śJayâ€ť Melzer and Josephine (Jackson) Melzer.
In 1959, Bob married his best friend and the love of his life, Nancy (Keenan) Melzer, in Sykesville, Pa., and they built a home and started a family in Desire, Pa.
They welcomed 4 children â€” Bobbi, Elizabeth, Susan and Doug.
Phyllis Theresa Himes, 87, of Punxsutawney, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Mulberry Square, where she had been a resident for the past four years.
She was surrounded by family and friends.
Phyllis was born June 4, 1926, in DeLancey, Pa.
She was the daughter of the late Cataldo and Theresa D. (Garvey) Scarantine.
Her father immigrated from Italy in 1899.
On Nov. 10, 1945, she married Reed M. Himes, who preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2001.
