Samuel W. Dinger, Sr., 70

Samuel W. Dinger, Sr., 70, of Brookville, (Stanton), died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at home.

He was born Sept. 27, 1942, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Ervin E. and Mary (Steiner) Dinger.

On Aug. 4, 1961, he married the former Judith M. Depp, who survives.
He attended the Stanton United Methodist Church.

Mr. Dinger worked as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include six children, Samuel W. Dinger, Jr. of Cape Coral, Fla., Steven Dinger and wife Denece of Summerville, Scott Dinger of Brookville, Shawn Dinger

David Anthony Rowan, 54

David Anthony Rowan, 54, of DuBois, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at home.

He was born Oct. 5, 1958, in Erie, a son of the late Thomas Anthony Rowan and Dolores T. (Woods) Rowan of DuBois.

David was a graduate of Academy High School in Erie.

He was Catholic by faith.

Mr. Rowan was the caretaker of his mother, Dolores.

In addition to his mother, surviving relatives include a brother, John A. Rowan; two sisters, Georgine R. Sweitzer, and Kathleen Catrabone, all of DuBois; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Edith J. Snyder, 77

Edith J. Snyder, 77, of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mrs. Snyder was born May 18, 1935, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Raymond S. Bair and Cora V. (White) Snyder.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay C. Snyder.

Mrs. Snyder was a member of the First Church of God, where she was a devoted Sunday School worker for more than 40 years.

Edith was also a secretary for Cloe Lumber.

She enjoyed housekeeping and spending time with her family.

Nancy North Pitts, 78

Nancy North Pitts, 78, of Brookville, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at home.

She was born Feb. 8, 1934, in Brookville, a daughter of the late Robert C. North and Aileen Fulton North.

On Oct. 20, 1955, she married Richard J. Pitts, who survives.

She taught the third grade in the Punxsutawney Area School District for 22 years at Mapleview School, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 65 years; a 1952 graduate from Brookville Area High School who then attended Indiana College and Penn State University.

William E. Smith, 81

William E. Smith, 81, of DuBois, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at DuBois Regional Medical Center, DuBois.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 18, 1931, in Winslow Township, the son of the late Kenneth E. Smith and Dorothy R. (Graham) Smith.

On Oct. 14, 1989, he married Audrey C. (Meier) Smith who survives.

He attended Reynoldsville High School.

Mr. Smith was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict.

He was a retired mechanic of 25 years for Dennison Brothers Chevrolet of Reynoldsville.

Mr. Smith attended the Salem Methodist Church.

Marguerite E. (Pearce) Smith, 95

Marguerite E. (Pearce) Smith, 95, of Smithport, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at the Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center in Punxsutawney.

The daughter of George C. and Grace (Stiver) Pearce, she was born on March 28, 1917, in Banks Township, Indiana County.

Marguerite was a member of the Smithport Wesleyan Methodist Church, where she had actively served her church in many capacities, including as a Sunday School teacher, as well as being involved with the Missionary Society for more than 30 years.

She thoroughly loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Lauretta Shoffner Shekitka, 85

Lauretta Shoffner Shekitka, 85, of Bozeman, MT, passed away on
Dec. 19, 2012, in her apartment at Springmeadows.

Lauretta was born on Dec. 7, 1927, at the family home in Dora, Pa., to Charles and Mildred Shoffner.

She attended high school in Kittanning, Pa., and graduated in 1945.

While attending Syracuse University, she met and married the love of her life Andy Shekitka — a dashing Navy veteran and center on the SU football team.

Lauretta and Andy owned and directed All Seasons Camp in Mt. Tremper, N.Y., from 1960 to 1971.

Thomas Shiock Sr., 75

Thomas Shiock Sr., 75, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Feb. 9, 1937, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late John Shiock and Mary Jane (Kukula) Shiock.

In 1957, he married Suzanne (Bish) Shiock of Punxsutawney, who survives.

He began working construction in 1968, working many years for Local No. 910 Construction General Laborers.

He also worked for Jefferson Garage, drilled rigs for P&N Coal and ran the Starlight Drive-In.

Laird B. Braughler, 89

Laird B. Braughler, 89, of Monroeville, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012.

He was the beloved husband of the late Lucille (Brennan) Braughler; father of Beverly (Jim) Spare and Robert (Julie) Braughler; grandfather of Adam and Kate Braughler; brother of Lorraine Sterner, Dolan and Duane Braughler, and the late Maralene Emerick, Bernadine Sensabaugh and Ronald Braughler.

Laird was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and had been employed by GMAC, where he was a dealer relations manager.

He also drove cars for Day Chevrolet.

H. Paul Hoover, 82

December 25, 2012

H. Paul Hoover, 82, Valier, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born on Jan.1, 1930, in Loop, Pa., a son of the late Russell and Vera (Fireman) Hoover.

He was the last remaining member of his family.

On July 28, 1956, he married Mary Emma (Braunns) Hoover, who survives.

He was a member of the Valier United Methodist Church and attended the Men’s Breakfasts.

He served in the United States

Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

He worked for PennDOT for 28 years as an equipment operator and retired from there in 1990.
