Mary Merry DeJohn, 90, Sykesville, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at Christ the King Manor after a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Eriton, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Merry) Cowan.
She married Merino DeJohn, who preceded her in death in 2002.
A graduate of Sykesville High, Mrs. DeJohn was a homemaker.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Sykesville. She enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Atlanta Braves, as well as walking, playing cards and bingo.
James R. "J.R." McConnaughey, 79, Rossiter, formerly of Buffalo, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, Sept, 28, 2011, at his home.
Mr. McConnaughey was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Buffalo, a son of the late Clinton and Isabella (Findley) McConnaughey.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (McGee) McConnaughey, whom he married May 1, 1954.
A U.S. Navy veteran who earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Mr. McConnaughey was a member of the Rossiter American Legion, a member and pistol instructor for the NRA and a hunter safety instructor.Â Â
Timothy Mark Heckman Sr., 52, Big Run, died Tuesday, Sept, 27, 2011, at home in the loving care of his children, who were by his side.
He was born Feb. 13, 1959, in Brookville, a son of the late Albert Charles and Constance Hope (Teats) Heckman.
He worked as a laborer, making windows at Thermal GardÂ in Punxsutawney for 25 years.
Mr. Heckman's true enjoyment was spending time with his children and grandchildren.Â He was a man of few words, but showed his love in his actions with his family. He also enjoyed his dogs, which were like children to him.
Eleanor Jean Bennett, 84, Big Run, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at McKinley Health Center, Brookville.
She was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Elmer and Opal (Kauffman) Freedline.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Bennett was a member of Paradise United Church of Christ Church.Â
She was a hard-working woman.Â She would pick and sell vegetables with her son at Bennettâs Farm.Â She also enjoyed being with her grandchildren.Â
Paulette Hollenbaugh, 63, Dayton, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born June 19, 1948, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Charles Edwin and Cora Edna (Tyger) Grinder.
April 22, 1995, she married Ed Hollenbaugh, who survives.
Mrs. Hollenbaugh was a resident of Punxsutawney most of her life prior to moving to Dayton in 1995.
She attended the Dayton Glade Run Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Cloe United Methodist Church.
John M. Reken, 85, Home, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011.
He was born July 10, 1926, in Beyer, a son of the late John and Ann (Ocel) Reken.
Jan. 31, 1953, he married Helen (Beresnyak) Reken, who survives.
They celebrated 56 years of marriage together.
He served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army. He was also a member of Dayton Sportsmen's Club, Sagamore VFW, William Penn Assoc. and UMWA Local 1619. He enjoyed the outdoors.
Mr. Reken worked as a farmer and also as a coal miner for 42 years, working for the North American Coal Co.
Nellie M. Rugh-Lowers, 64, Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at Golden Living Center in Shippenville.
She was born Aug. 28, 1947, in Alliance, Ohio, a daughter of the late Louis W. and Blanche (Finnegan) Lowers.
Ms. Lowers loved reading and talking with family and friends. She was a kind-hearted person, a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.
Dr. Thomas E. Cressley, DDS, 89, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at his home.
He was born March 13, 1922, in Glen Campbell, a son of the late Clayton and Marvel (Gibson) Cressley.
Aug. 13, 1950, he married Florinda (Anderson) Cressley, who preceded him in death Dec. 16, 1997.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Dr. Cressley was a retired dentist and a graduate of Glen Campbell High School, Waynesburg University and the University of Pittsburgh Dental School.
Margy D. Kuntz, 77, Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late John Kopnitsky, Effie (Reams) Kopnitsky and Ruby (Geist) Kopnitsky.
Ms. Kuntz worked for Lorree Footwear and Standard Pennant Company. Later, she was a seamstress for the Stitchers Mound.
Elizabeth Woods, 86, Rossiter, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born Dec. 30, 1924, in Winslow Township, a daughter of the late Blair W. and Hazel B. (Uplinger) Vandervort.
She was married to Delmont "Smokey" Woods, who survives, of Punxsutawney.
Mrs. Woods worked many years as an LPN. She also worked private duty and was an excellent caregiver and a midwife.
She had many friends and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.
