Ronald E. Gourley, 67

Ronald E. Gourley, 67, Hamilton, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at home.

He was born Jan. 10, 1944, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Donald G. and Henrietta (Kanouff) Gourley.

Nov. 29, 1974, he married Lela Adams Gourley, who survives.

A farm boy at heart, Mr. Gourley was an avid hunter and sportsman who enjoyed farm tractors.

He was a dozer operator for Original Fuels.

John Alvah Hoy, 90

John Alvah Hoy, 90, Ludlow, Mass., formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2011.

Known as "Al" to friends and family, he was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Chloride, Ariz., to the late Charles C. and Gertrude (Ware) Hoy.

Jan. 24, 1946, in Punxsutawney, he married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Louise (Hoffman) Hoy, who preceded him in death.

He graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1938 and attended two years of business school.

Mary Elaine (Anderson) Skubisz, 82

Mary Elaine (Anderson) Skubisz, 82, Anita, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, in Horseheads, N.Y., after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born June 12, 1929, in Delancey, a daughter of Ernest "Shine" and Mary (Lazorcak) Anderson.

Sept. 3, 1949, she married Francis Skubisz, who preceded her in death.
A devoted homemaker, Mrs. Skubisz loved to bake and cook, and she kept her mother's Slovak recipes alive year after year.

She was a life-long member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Punxsutawney.

She was a long-time resident of Anita.

Dorothy Jean Gallagher, 75

Dorothy Jean Gallagher, 75, Dayton, passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Oct. 26, 1935, in Kittanning, a daughter of the late Carl and Mable (Little) Rankin.

She was married to her loving husband of 57 years, Walter P. Gallagher, who preceded her in death Feb. 1, 2010.

Mrs. Gallagher was a lifetime resident of the area and a devoted member of Dayton Glade Run Presbyterian Church. Her gardens were her pride and joy, and she spent much time creating these beautiful landscapes.

William O. Shugarts, 91

William O. Shugarts, 91, Troutville, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at the DuBois Nursing Home.

He was born April 14, 1920, in Troutville, a son of the late Norman and Willa (Schoch) Shugarts.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
Jan. 11, 1944, he married Dorothy L. (Heckel) Shugarts, who preceded him in death Feb.18, 2011.

He retired from Crescent Brick Plant in Falls Creek after more than 35 years of service. Previous to that, he worked in the Cramer Mines.
