Police seek info related to animal cruelty incident, cat's death

CANOE TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pa. State Police are searching for information regarding a cruelty to animals case that led to a missing cat being put to sleep.

Sometime between June 28 and July 2, the cat went missing from Central Street in Canoe Township, Indiana County.

July 2, the cat returned to its owner with a noticeable limp, and a hole was discovered near the cat's limb.

Upon further investigation by a veterinarian, it was determined that the cat was shot with a small-caliber firearm.

Due to extensive internal injuries, the cat had to be put to sleep, police said.

The 2014 edition of music in the park continues at 6:30 p.m. tonight with the local rock band The Avenue. Snacks and drinks will be available, and attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs.

Rep. Smith issues statement on award received

At long last, construction began on Tuesday on the property where the Punxsy Hotel was located on North Findley Street before it was destroyed by fire.

PINE CREEK TOWNSHIP — There’s something for everyone at this year’s Jefferson County Fair, so mark your calendars for July 13-19, and plan to take the whole family out to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, located on SR 28, to enjoy as much as you can.

This year’s fair includes the staples — rides, animals and plenty of food — as well as old favorite events and a couple of brand-new shows and activities. There’s lots going on for kids and adults of all ages.

Police investigating wreck that sent Punxsy man, 26, to hospital with moderate injuries

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a one-vehicle accident that sent Jacob A. Hazlett, 26, Punxsutawney, to the hospital with moderate injuries and also caused minor injuries to his passenger, Dustin R. Passmore, 25, Valier.

Police said the incident occurred at 12:48 a.m. Monday along Route 3008, No. 8 Road.

Hazlett was traveling east along the road when he allegedly failed to negotiate a sharp, left-hand curve.

County Commissioner McIntyre to retire at end of current term

BROOKVILLE — Jefferson County Commissioner Jim McIntyre announced on Monday that he will not be seeking re-election at the end of his current term in December 2015 and will be retiring.

He and his wife, Eileen, plan to relocate to Charlotte, North Carolina, to spend quality time with their daughters and family.

McIntyre acknowledged all the voters and his supporters over that past 10-and-a-half years and assures all that he will complete the job he was elected to do.

BWP a finalist for state award

At their most recent meeting, the Jefferson County commissioners gave a plaque to BWP Bats, LLC, celebrating its nomination for the Governor's Impact Award in the Pennsylvania North Central region.

Punxsy Borough Police Department making good use of firing range

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Ready, aim, fire! Those are the words that rang out recently at the Punxsutawney Borough Police Department's firing range in Young Township.

As required by code, the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC), police officers in the state are required to pass a firearms training course every year.

Carl Gotwald, Jefferson County Sheriff and firearms training officer, said officers are required to qualify on handgun, rifle and shotgun each year to stay up-to-date.

Police searching for missing Julian woman, 37

ROSE TOWNSHIP — DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police are searching for a missing 37-year-old woman from Julian, Pa., who jumped out of a moving vehicle at 8:19 a.m. July 4 along Interstate 80 at mile marker 77.6.

Susan L. Bachman of Eagle Valley Road, Julian, is described at 5-feet-4-inches tall and weighing 120 pounds, with red hair and green eyes.

She was last seen wearing a blue flannel shirt and blue jeans.

Police are classifying the incident as a "missing person — endangered," and a mental health warrant has been issued for Bachman to have her evaluated.
