Commission addresses concerns about tax notices

February 24, 2011

BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County Commissioners Tuesday addressed changes to tax notices this year.

Commission Chairman Paul Corbin said changes to the tax notice have caused some confusion among residents.

He said the new tax notices are only a single page rather than two, and they are mailed directly to taxpayers’ homes.

“The envelopes say, very noticeably, ‘Important tax information enclosed,’” Corbin said, adding that two tax notices will be sent out, one for property tax and one for occupational tax.

Judge denies council’s appeal on fired police officer

February 23, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The appeal filed by Punxsutawney Borough Council to Jefferson County Common Pleas Court regarding the reinstatement of terminated Punxsutawney Borough Police officer Brian Andrekovich was denied by President Judge John H. Foradora in an opinion released Wednesday.

In its July 2010 report, the Punxsutawney Civil Service Commission ordered that Andrekovich be reinstated with the department after council fired him stemming from the Aug. 15, 2009, death of Stephen Obbish, 48, in the back of a borough police cruiser.

London: Supposed HVAC issues may be based on personal preferences

February 23, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Is the heating-ventilation-air-conditioning (HVAC) system at Punxsutawney Area High School acting up — again?

During the Punxsutawney Area School Board’s Wednesday committee meeting, board President Gary Conrad asked PAHS Principal David London about heating issues with the system, which underwent an extensive reworking last year after years of problems.

London said based on what he has heard from people in the building — it’s too hot or too cold — his assessment is that supposed problem areas may be based on personal opinion.

February 23, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In an opinion released Wednesday, Jefferson County President Judge John H. Foradora said that the court concurred with a report from the Punxsutawney Civil Service Commission, in which it said there was insufficient evidence to support the borough's reasoning behind firing Borough Police Officer Brian Andrekovich.

The commission, in its report from July 2010, ordered that Andrekovich be reinstated with the department after council fired him stemming from the Aug. 15, 2099, death of Stephen Obbish in the back of a borough police cruiser.

Officials sound off on 814 area code dispute

February 22, 2011

DUBOIS — Two legislators have requested that the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission (PUC) hold a second hearing regarding the possible change of the 814 area code in western and central Pennsylvania.

State Rep. Matt Gabler, 75th district, and State Sen. Joe Scarnati, 25th District, requested that the PUC hold another public hearing regarding the 814 area code change, which is being discussed due to the exhaustion the available phone numbers in the area code.

The first hearing was poorly attended due to lack of publicity and bad weather.

814 area code creates talk

February 21, 2011

DUBOIS — If you thought you would never see the day when all of the phone numbers in area code 814 would be completely used up, that day is just about here.

A group of cell phone and landline telephone users met on a snowy Monday at the Best Western Conference Center in DuBois to discuss the impending change for telephone users in the region from 814 to a new 582 area code.
