Firefighters called twice to personal care home

ADRIAN — Multiple fire companies responded to a call at AM/PM Personal Care Home in Adrian when smoke alarms went off at approximately 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters from seven companies were called to the scene of the facility that houses mostly elderly residents.

Bryan Smith, Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company chief, said there was quite a bit of smoke in the structure when firefighters arrived on scene.
Smith said a short search helped firefighters determine the smoke was coming from an air conditioning unit.

Car, motorcycle crashes occur over weekend

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — A driver and passenger were injured in a one-vehicle accident that occurred at 10:35 p.m. Saturday on Snyder Hill Road, Young Township.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, an Acura RSX driven by Jeffrey W. Smith Jr., 22, Punxsutawney, was traveling west on Snyder Hill Road when he lost control of his vehicle while negotiating a left curve in the roadway.

Duck Derby winners

George C. Brown Community Pool lifeguards help ducks toward the finish line Sunday during the annual Duck Derby that benefits the pool. "Duckmaster" Brian Smith picks the winners from the water as they make it through the gate. SPLASH has been holding the event for over a decade, and it started out in the Mahoning Creek but has since moved to the pool. Over 750 tickets were sold this year, and all proceeds go toward the pool's maintenance and upkeep.

• 10 to 11 a.m. — Children’s Pedal Tractor Pull. The tractors are supplied by the sponsor. Prizes for winners in age groups four and five; six and seven; and eight and nine.
• 10 a.m. to noon — Bike Rodeo at Harmon Field. Sponsored by Jefferson County EMS, STAT MedEvac, Punxsutawney Borough Police, the Punxsutawney Fire Department and UPMC Pre-Hospital Care Services (see Page 3 for more information).

Board OKs Fusco taking over juvenile witness program

BROOKVILLE — Friday, the Jefferson County Salary Board unanimously approved Michelle Fusco, the current adult victim witness coordinator, to take over as coordinator of the juvenile victim witness program.
The program’s current coordinator, Dan Leonard, is retiring.

District Attorney Jeff Burkett made the motion, which was seconded by Jeff Pisarcik, county commissioner, to add the juvenile position to Fusco’s job description.

Once again, today — 07.09.11 — is Odd Day

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — That’s right: It’s here again, and according to the now-retired teacher who keeps track of such, well, oddities, there are only two more such dates left in this century.

Once again, today — July 9, 2011 — is Odd Day, according to Ron Gordon, who recently retired as a teacher in the Sequoia-Union School District in Redwood City, Calif.

If you’re still confused: Today is Odd Day because the date — 07.09.11 — is a correct sequence of odd numbers.

County creates natural gas task force

BROOKVILLE — Hoping to put Jefferson County on the map, officials recently created a natural gas task force, with county Commissioner Jeff Pisarcik serving as chairman.

According to Director of Economic Development John Weible, the group is in the early stages of formation, but seeks to debut at the Pennsylvania Gas Expo 2011, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21 at the IUP Kovalchick Complex in Indiana.

The purpose of the expo is to seek and bring businesses and the public together to educate and network about Marcellus Shale.

- 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, Mahoning Street near Barclay Square.
- 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Kids’ Projects in the Park.
- 11:30 to noon — Balloons The Clown.
- Noon to 1 p.m. — Grandpa Cratchet.
- 12:30 to 1 p.m. — Bubbling & Juggling.
- 1:30 to 2 p.m. — Balloons The Clown.
- 2:30 to 3 p.m. — Bubbling & Juggling.
- 3 to 4 p.m. — Grandpa Cratchet.
