Fresh Air Fund again welcomes youngsters from New York City

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Fifteen Fresh Air Fund kids — between six and 18 years of age — arrived at SS.C.D. Tuesday.

The boys and girls were welcomed with open arms from local host families for a fun-filled week or more mini-vacation.

Some of the youngsters left their New York City homes for the first time, while others returned to visit the same host family for consecutive summers.

10 a.m. to noon — Children’s Workshops: Settler-era children’s activities (ages six to 12) at the Lattimer House. Sponsored by Punxsutawney Historical Society.
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Kids Projects in the Park.
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Granpa Cratchet.
10:30 to 11 to a.m. — Registration for Diaper Derby (Crawling Babies) and for Tot Trot (12-18 months on padded course).
11 to 11:30 a.m. — Diaper Derby Race, followed by the Tot Trot Race.
10 to 11 a.m. — Carrie McQueen, Stilt Walking.
11:30 a.m. to noon — Balloons The Clown.

Eagle Riders No. 1231 prepare for first-ever ‘Burrow Thunder’ Saturday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Eagle Riders motorcycle club its revving up for its first-ever “Burrow Thunder” Saturday.

The 76-mile trip — which will be held rain or shine — departs from the F.O. Eagles No. 1231 parking lot.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Special Olympics.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the ride departing at noon and returning by 5 p.m.

The Groundhog Day Festival held its annual “Teddy Bear Picnic, sponsored by the Punxsutawney Career Women’s Club, Tuesday at Barclay Square.(From left) winners in “My Bear and I” — Emily Dobbins, first place; Mary Sue Kimmerle, second; and Lauren Kennedy, third. The festival continues today.

Man injured in motorcycle crash

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — A Scottdale man was flown to an area trauma center following a two-motorcycle accident that occurred at 1:45 p.m. Monday on Route 36, Young Township, in front of Ken McFarland Selective Cars.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, a Suzuki Boulevard motorcycle operated by Robert Bushmyer of Scottdale was traveling north on Route 36 when he struck a Polaris Victory motorcycle traveling in front of him driven by his son Eric T. Bushmyer, who had slowed to make a right turn into Ken McFarland

Monday night was all about ambiance at the 45th Annual Groundhog Festival as Savannah Jack performed in Barclay Square. The festival continues today.

A Smart Parrot
Senator Mitchell has a parrot of which he is very proud. It is a great talker, and something of a singer, and the Senator tells of its smartness with as much enthusiasm as a fond father relates the cute things said by his two-year-old offspring. The parrot calls the Senator "Jim," and his wife "Cal."

Punxsutawney Phil is the best man for this proposal

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Not even Punxsutawney Phil could have prognosticated the plan for this proposal.

Sarah O'Donnell and Jeff White enjoyed the “Phantastic Phils!” — especially the one in front of The Punxsutawney Spirit office on Pine Street — so much, they returned to Punxsy Friday to track down the remaining eight statues they couldn't find in December.

But Friday, Jeff — with help from Spirit staff, Punxsutawney Phil himself and his co-handler, John Griffiths — pulled off a larger plan: Propose to Sarah in front of their favorite “Phantastic Phil!” at The Spirit office.

Girl, 4, injured in crash

PERRY TOWNSHIP — A young Amish girl was struck by a car Friday afternoon after she ran out in front of the vehicle along Route 210, Perry Township.
According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, a 1996 Honda Accord driven by a female whose name was not available at Spirit press time was traveling south on Route 210 when a four-year-old Amish girl ran out onto the highway and into the path of her vehicle.
