BREAKING NEWS: Cincy Reds call up Mesoraco

CINCINNATI — According members of his family, Devin Mesoraco has been called up by the Cincinnati Reds after spending this season with the AAA-affiliate Louisville Bats.

The Bats are scheduled to play this evening, but according to his dad, Doug, Devin will not play.

Mesoraco is scheduled to appear at the Reds' game against the Phillies at 12:35 p.m. Thursday.

Despite traffic concerns, first day goes off well

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The sun was shining, and most of the students were smiling for the first day of classes in the Punxsutawney Area School District Tuesday.

Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe said as far as the bus routes were concerned, there weren’t any problems at any of the levels.

Wolfe said he visited three elementary schools, the middle school and the high school for the first student day and found teachers and students alike happy to be back to work, and students happy to be back with their friends.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It has been a long, hot summer for everyone, especially those who work outdoors. But there is a certain group that must deal with heat and dehydration issues throughout the year: Firefighters.
Firefighting is a tough job, work so physically intense that it demands every ounce of energy a firefighter can muster. Sometimes, it takes a toll.

County looks into residents’ concerns about Mortgage Electronic Registry System

BROOKVILLE — For the past few months, Tea Party members have been asking the Jefferson County Commissioners to research a mortgage-recording system that they believe is causing the county to lose money.

MERS, a Mortgage Electronic Registry System, is set up to allow the assignment of mortgages without recording the assignment in the county recorder's office.

Because of the concern displayed by some Brookville residents, the commissioners asked the county's solicitor, Jim Dennison, to thoroughly examine MERS.

BREAKING NEWS — Coroner, police ID man who drowned at Hemlock

ROSSITER — Both the Indiana County Coroner and Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police have identified the man whose body had been sought by numerous water rescue teams since his boat capsized Saturday afternoon on Hemlock Lake, Banks Township.

In separate reports, both Coroner Michael Baker and PSP-Punxsy said the man was identified as Gary Lynn Korney, 63, Glen Campbell.

Korney's body was difficult to find due to darkness, high winds and poor visibility, Baker said. It was discovered and removed from the lake around 8:45 a.m. Monday.

Police: Search will continue for man missing in lake

BANKS TOWNSHIP — The family members of a 63-year-old man maintained a silent vigil on the shores of Hemlock Lake Saturday and Sunday as rescue crews and dive teams from area fire departments continued to search for him after he disappeared when the boat from which he was fishing overturned at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State police, the man, whose name has not yet been released, and his son were fishing at Hemlock Lake when, for reasons unknown, the boat capsized. The man's son was able to swim the 100 yards to shore.

Big Run VFW taking over fall groundhog run

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Big Run VFW Post No. 9044 is the new coordinator of the Groundhog Fall 50K trail run, which in the past has been managed by the Punxsy Road Runners Club.

Bob Lott, Big Run post quartermaster, said over 1,000 runners have participated in the race in the past, but the running club had decided to discontinue operating it.

The race will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, in Punxsutawney.

Police: 63-year-old man presumed dead following boating accident

A 63-year-old man is presumed dead following a boating accident at Hemlock Lake Saturday afternoon, according to Punxsutawney-based State Police.

Police said the man, whose identity has not been released, was fishing in a boat with his son in Banks Township, Indiana County, around 3:30 p.m. yesterday when the boat capsized.

The victim's son was able to swim to shore, police said, and the victim was last seen by witnesses in the water near the boat.

Police suspended their search at nightfall Saturday but resumed it this morning.

The investigation is continuing.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Students moving into IUP-Punxsutawney’s Living-Learning Center today and Friday aren’t the only new faces on campus.

Terry Appolonia began his tenure as the dean at IUP-Punxsy July 25, after serving in various positions at the main campus since 1986. More recently, he served as the dean of students and associate vice-president for student development at the university’s main campus.
