Driver injured, spill closes Route 119 for hours

COVODE — A tractor-trailer transporting corrosive acid crashed and rolled over along Route 119 in Covode, North Mahoning Township, spilling the acid and diesel fuel across the road around 11:23 p.m. Thursday.

The road remained closed through Friday morning.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, Michael D. Devos, 50, Pittsburgh, was operating a 1998 Peterbilt tractor-trailer north along Route 119 when he lost control while trying to negotiate a left curve in the road.

Amid sun, heat and waves, Cherian continues canoe trip for Fox Foundation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Of all the items that Michael Cherian packed for his canoe journey via the Mississippi River to New Orleans, one has become invaluable almost every day.

“I love my mosquito net,” Cherian said Thursday, taking a break from his 2,000-mile canoe trip. “I take care of it. I’m really glad I brought it. As soon as the sun sets, I grill until it’s dark then have to set up camp. By then, they’re out biting you.”

BREAKING NEWS — Accident, spill close Route 119 near Covode

COVODE — Jefferson County Control reported an overturned tractor-trailer was leaking fluid — possibly diesel fuel and acid, according to scanner transmissions — around 11:40 p.m. Thursday night along Route 119 in the Covode area.

Fire crews and fire police from Punxsutawney closed Route 119 from Route 210 south toward the scene.

Scanner transmissions also indicated the people in the area of the crash were evacuated.

Also responding to the scene were Perry Township firefighters, Indiana County's Hazmat unit and PennDOT, among others.

Library director seeks improved signage for entryway

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During Tuesday’s Public Safety committee meeting, Punxsutawney Memorial Library Director Coral Ellshoff said she would like to improve the signage and increase the visibility of the entrance at the library.

Committee member and council President Susan Glessner said her only request was that the lettering be consistent with the rest of the lettering on the building.

SS.C.D. festival starts Friday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Preparations continue for one of the most popular events of the summer in Punxsutawney, The Ss. Cosmas & Damian (SS.C.D.) Roman Catholic Church 72nd annual Lawn Festival begins at 6 p.m. Friday.

Frank Hetrick, chairman of the festival committee, said the festival has a broad appeal, and those who attend are not just from the Punxsy area.
Hetrick said the festival is known throughout the area. He helps spread the word, delivering a booklet detailing the festival to 15 different Roman and Byzantine Catholic churches from Coalport to Clarion every summer.

Work progressing downtown, but delays continue for now

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Progress continues on the downtown Punxsutawney Traffic signal upgrade project, according to Roger Steele, chairman of Public Works.

Steele, who spoke at Tuesday's meeting, said that traffic has been snarled during the day all week, with the installation of the new lights and poles yet to come.

Traffic will get worse before it gets better, he said, as crews continue to move forward with the upgrade.

Library Days

Reward offered for arson information

BIG RUN — Another fire in Big Run has been ruled arson by the state police fire marshal, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has entered the investigation and is offering a reward for tips that could lead to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for the arsons.

The ATF is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) involved with any of the fires in the Big Run borough area.

The Punxsutawney Fire Department assisted at two vehicle accidents that occurred on Saturday evening and early Sunday...
