Holly Tour hosts display Christmas tastes, traditions

December 8, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It’s a chance to take a breather from shopping, to find some new ideas for holiday decorating, or a way to see how other local residents embrace and perpetuate their own Christmas traditions.

That’s what the annual Holly Tour is all about, and it runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at six different locations in the Punxsy area (see the accompanying box on Page 3).

The tour, which is at least 20 years old, was first established by the former Young Women’s Club, of which Katie Laska, who owns Laska’s Pizza and Caterina’s Dolce Cucina, was a member.

White said PennDOT has scheduled the bridge construction for next summer with a detour for northbound traffic to travel down Indiana Hill; southbound traffic reduced to one lane of the bridge; and pedestrian traffic being maintained.

Smith, Aging Service warn seniors about possible scam

December 7, 2011

INDIANA — Both the Indiana County Aging Services Inc. and state Rep. Sam Smith are warning local seniors about a scam in which some people are being led to believe they must pay to file a claim that in fact is free of charge.

“Each year, thousands of Pennsylvania’s senior citizens benefit from the rebates they receive through the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program,” Smith said in a statement.

He reminds area seniors through his 66th District — which includes Jefferson, Indiana and Armstrong counties — that it is not necessary to pay a private entity to fill out an application.

Local woman signs up for bone marrow registry; receives call for help years later

December 6, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Rachelle Bray knew the odds were rare.

But she wasn’t sure how rare — not until she received a phone call in June, and the voice on the other line said she was a match.

There is only a one in 20,000 chance that someone could be an unrelated, compatible bone marrow donor, according to the American Bone Marrow Donor Registry.

And Bray was that one.

“Everybody is unique,” Bray, who is a cardiopulmonary technologist for the Punxsutawney Area Hospital, said. “To find two people, and their blood is that similar, it’s exciting.”

Big Run vets remember Pearl Harbor

December 5, 2011

BIG RUN — "Seventy years ago, Dec. 7, 1941, the sky over Pear Harbor, Hawaii, was filled with Japanese planes.

"When the last wave of attacking aircraft rejoined the Japanese fleet, 1,178 Americans lay wounded, and 2,403 lay dead or dying, and a great portion of the U.S. was in shambles.

"Thus began America's entry into World War II — five years that changed the world," Big Run VFW Post No. 9044 Commander James Pallone said at a memorial service Sunday at the Big Run War Memorial, to remember those who were lost in the attack at Pearl Harbor.
