East End invites everyone to a spooky time

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It should be a hauntingly good time in Punxsy’s East End during its annual Halloween trick-or-treat night Saturday, with many scary surprises for little and big ghosts and goblins.

If trick-or-treaters are looking for a frightening — yet fun — experience, they should check out the display at the home of Michele “Boo” Lorenzo and Jan Zamperini, 709 East Mahoning St., from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday during East End’s trick-or-treat night.

Lorenzo said this is the ninth year for her Halloween spectacular, and all for the same reason: For the kids.

Rebert’s arrest: Which state laws to follow?

BROOKVILLE — In a continuance hearing Wednesday, the prosecution and the defense in the case of the Commonwealth vs. Steven Patrick Rebert were on opposite sides on which set of laws should be used regarding a June 2010 traffic stop during which he was arrested by law enforcement in his native state of New York.

The issue, pertaining to items taken from Rebert’s pockets during the stop and his statements to police: Should the court look at those issues in accordance to Pennsylvania or New York state laws?

Dems seek to rise from grassroots

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During their fall banquet Wednesday at the Eagles Club, county Democrats said they’re starting from the ground up in order to raise their candidates to higher levels of government.

“We need to start supporting our local candidates,” such as those running for council, mayor, school board or township board of supervisors, said county party Chairman Dennis Peck. “This is where our part has to start.

“We need to fill those seats with Democrats,” he said. “That’s our goal.”

Hamilton man suffers serious injuries in Perry Township crash

PERRY TOWNSHIP — A Hamilton man was flown to a hospital following a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday on St. Jacobs Church Road, Perry Township.

According to Punxsy-based Pennsylvania State Police, a 1995 Ford 9,000 coal truck driven by Richard E. Smith, 66, Brockway, was traveling south on St. Jacobs Church Road while a 1996 Ford Aspire, driven by Del S. Heitzenrater, 29, Hamilton, was traveling north.

Police said both vehicles entered a curve in the road at the same time, when Heitzenrater’s vehicle traveled across the highway into the opposing lane of travel.

Safety isn’t Scary

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Safety is the key word for trick-or-treating, which will be held in Punxsutawney Monday, Oct. 31, beginning with the traditional firefighters’ parade at 6 p.m., and trick-or-treating to follow until 9 p.m.

All youngsters in the borough — including East End children, who will trick-or-treat Saturday — are welcome to participate.

Jail has only one volunteer for Orange Patrol duties

BROOKVILLE — It may be fall and closing upon Halloween, but don’t expect to see much orange — orange jumpsuits, that is.

During Monday’s meeting of the Jefferson County Jail Inspection/Intermediate Punishment Board, Sheriff Carl Gotwald reported that the Orange Patrol will not be up-and-running until he receives more participation from the inmates.

Currently, he is down to one volunteer.

The sheriff’s office and jail oversee the Inmate Work Release Program, and its Orange Patrol performs jobs throughout the county, including snow removal, painting, clean-up and maintenance.

Moose Club burglarized; $1,000 stolen

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — On the heels of a rash of burglaries in the Punxsutawney area, the Punxsutawney Moose Club, located along Route 436, was burglarized around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.

Police reported that actor(s) entered a rear door of the club by force and removed approximately $1,000 in cash.

In the past few weeks, similiar incidents have occurred at Punxy Phil's Family Restaurant; Neko's Restaurant; Cookie's Caboose; Mary's Place; and Union Drilling.
