Trooper Wilson presented with Trackchair

DUBOIS — A special ceremony was held for Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Brad Wilson on Tuesday afternoon at his home. Wilson, who was shot serving in the line of duty and is now confined to a wheelchair, was awarded an Action Trackchair, which will enable him to move around outside and in the woods. Pictured (front row) are Wilson and his wife, Erica. Also pictured (back row) are Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Colonel Timothy Mercer of Harrisburg and Pennsylvania State Police Major George Kuzilla, area commander.

Chamber director reflects on 2014; looks ahead at 2015

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to 2015, but is also celebrating its accomplishments of 2014.

Michele Neal, Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, said one of the positives is that they welcomed some new members in the past year.

Neal said there were some old members in the chamber who expanded their businesses like The Medicine Shoppe, adding a second pharmacy in the Primary Health Network building.

Suspicious suitcases set off a scare

January 1, 2015

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Suspicious packages that were found in the parking
lot at Walmart in Young Township

Thursday were found not to be dangerous following an investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Hazardous Device and Explosive Section (HDES) unit.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, two suspicious packages, consisting of two suitcases that were left in the Walmart parking lot near the Lawn and Garden portion of the building and were discovered at approximately 7 a.m. on Thursday.

Dobson’s Store to close its doors

After about 49 years in business, Dobson's Store in Worthville will close its doors today. Pictured is owner Elmer Dobson behind the counter on one of the country store's last evenings of operation. He opened the store in 1965 after the conclusion of his military service. He said he plans to leave the building where it is, as part of the history of Worthville.

Construction at water treatment plant to protect service against wet weather

BIG RUN — Pennsylvania American Water Company (PAWC) has announced the start of construction to install a concrete wall to protect the company's Punxsutawney Water Treatment Plant, located on the East Branch of the Mahoning Creek, from flooding during extreme wet weather events.

Josephine Posti, PAWC community relations coordinator, said the cost of this plant improvement is approximately $225,000.

Reynoldsville woman killed in Young Twp. one-car accident near Crawfordtown Road

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — A Reynoldsville woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident that occurred at 4:55 p.m. on Tuesday on Route 310 near Crawfordtown Road, Young Township.

According to PSP-Punxsutawney, a vehicle driven by Regina M. Cable, 75, Reynoldsville, struck a tree and left the roadway while traveling south on Route 310, Young Township.

For unknown reasons, Cable’s vehicle, a 2009 Nissan Altima, was seen traveling off the west shoulder of Route 310, and impacted a embankment.

Light Up a Child’s Life campaign concludes with total over $77,000

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Another successful "Light Up A Child's Life" campaign wrapped on Friday at Miller Brothers Furniture in Punxsutawney, with an approximate total of $77,460 raised through the annual radio-thon on WPXZ 104.1 F.M.

Lindsey Herzing, regional manager for Make-A-Wish, thanked Punxsutawney once again for the great support.
