As it did last year, Midlife Crisis — (from left) John Keeley on keyboards, Jesse DeChurch on vocals, Mike Kurtz on bass and Dave Buzard on guitar — opened the first show of the 2012 Music in the Park series Thursday night in Barclay Square.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Punxsy will not only celebrate life through this year’s event, but also through art.
For the first time ever, Lilly Oncology’s art display, “Oncology on Canvas,” will be on display during Punxsy’s annual Relay For Life, set for this Saturday in Barclay Square.
According to Jennifer Pavlak, who is co-chairing this year’s event with Robyn Shaffer, Lilly will set up 25 canvases and will have the top three pictures on display Saturday.
BROOKVILLE — It wasn’t a tornado or a microburst, just high, straight-line winds, the result of severe thunderstorms that caused widespread property damage in the Sykesville/Henderson Township area Saturday.
Two separate severe thunderstorms warnings were issued for Jefferson County, the first at 4:45 p.m., the second at 6:15 p.m., according to Tracy Zents, director of emergency services for Jefferson County.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council approved a request to sponsor the Punxsutawney Memorial Library for a grant in order to perform some much-needed renovations to the building, which is part of the Mahoning East Civic Center.
Monday, library Director Coral Ellshoff asked council’s permission for the library board to change the building’s layout and to sponsor the library for a Keystone Grant, which is a matching grant, so the library board must match dollar-for-dollar what the state gives.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — It’s hard to believe, but actions taken by the Punxsutawney Area School Board during its Monday meeting indicate that the start of the 2012-13 school year is just around the corner.
Monday, the board approved several purchases in the areas of food service and technology, including a combination (or combi) oven from U.S. Foods for $18,954.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — As has been the case for the last several years, Music in the Park again resumes on the heels of the Groundhog Festival, starting Thursday in Barclay Square and running through Thursday, Aug. 23.
Kicking off the free series for 2012 is the band that kicked off the 2011 series, Midlife Crisis. For the rest of the schedule, see the accompanying box.
Music in the Park was first established a number of years ago by John Serian, who always believed that as long as Punxsy had its own natural setting in which to enjoy music, it would be a shame not to use it.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council President Larry Chenoga said he has been working on a plan on how to better enforce borough codes that have to do with property maintenance.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Contract negotiations between groups representing the Punxsutawney Area School District and the Punxsutawney Area Education Association (PAEA) continue, although the two committees will not meet again with a state mediator until Tuesday, Aug. 7.
That’s simply because that date was the one that best suited representatives for both groups and the mediator, according to Gary Conrad, president of the Punxsutawney Area School Board.
“We’re back on track,” he said after Monday’s voting meeting.
SYKESVILLE — Emergency officials said the quick — but violent — storm that ripped through the southern part of Jefferson County Saturday evening leaving hundreds without power and damaging several homes was probably a microburst, not a tornado.
Strong thunderstorms hit the Sykesville and Henderson Township area around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh had issued a severe thunderstorm warning just prior to the microburst, said Tracy W. Zents, director of Emergency Services for Jefferson County.
