PennDOT: Bridge work set to begin in early June

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Representatives from PennDOT District 10 presented plans for work on Margiotti Bridge this summer during a public event Thursday at the Mahoning East Civic Complex.

According to John McCombie, senior civil engineer supervisor-transportation for PennDOT, the scope of the project entails retrofitting certain parts of the barriers on the 75-year-old bridge that spans Mahoning Creek, Water Street and part of the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad.

Council president: ‘Major changes’ on the way

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Borough residents can expect major changes to be made by Punxsutawney Borough Council during its Feb. 13 meeting.

“Major changes are about to occur by council that will surprise a lot of people,” council President Larry Chenoga said Monday.

“This is going to be a great council, and at our next meeting, we are going to make some changes that will surprise a lot of people,” he said. “We’re going to move forward, and we’re going to move forward in the right direction.

Delinquent sewer bill holders can expect notices

WALSTON — Wednesday, the Young Township Board of Supervisors warned that the sewer customers with the highest delinquent balances, who have not made payment arrangements, will soon receive notices from the district judge regarding their account.

“We’re going to take five delinquent customers at a time to the district judge,” Secretary/Treasurer Mary Ann Redding said Wednesday.

Chairman Andrew Meterko, said other delinquent customers might make arrangements once they see that other customers with delinquent bills are taken to the district judge.

Prosecution, defense continue jury selection for Rebert’s trial

BROOKVILLE —Jury selection for the double murder trial of Steven P. Rebert continued at the Jefferson County Courthouse Tuesday morning.

That morning, a few of the potential jurors interviewed by the prosecution and the defense had been called back from the night before, when proceedings in the selection wrapped up around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The day before, the first pool of jurors was asked if any one of them felt as if they could not take part on the jury. According to WJAC-TV, about 20 people stepped forward.

Property owner: Location of boxes is dangerous

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Several Punxsutawney business and property owners shared their concerns regarding PennDOT’s downtown traffic signal project at Monday’s Punxsutawney Borough council meeting.

Joe Ferrara, who, with his wife Joan VanDyke, owns the building at 101 East Mahoning St. that houses the studios of VanDyke & Company, expressed concern about what he believes to be a dangerous situation for property owners and pedestrians alike regarding the new traffic control devices that are being constructed on the sidewalks throughout the downtown area.

Interviewer: Teachers, counselors draw battle lines against child abuse

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Teachers and guidance counselors in local schools are at an important starting point in ending the cycle of child abuse, according to Pat Berger, the executive director and forensic interviewer for the Western PA CARES for Kids Child Advocacy Center (CAC).

“They can be the first people a child decides to disclose the abuse to,” she said. “How they get the information can affect the case.”

Council rehires Brian Andrekovich

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After almost two-and-a-half years of investigations and legal action, Det. Brian Andrekovich, a Punxsutawney Borough Police officer fired in November 2009, was approved to return to work next week.

During Monday’s council meeting, the motion for Andrekovich to return to work was approved 7-0.

Council fired Andrekovich Nov. 3, 2009, following the death of Stephen Obbish, 48, Aug. 15, 2009, in the back of a police cruiser after Andrekovich arrested him for public drunkenness at the Goodwill store in the Punxy Plaza.

Board: Be mindful of speaking publicly about contract talks

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A member of the Punxsutawney Area School Board asked questions about contract negotiations with the Punxsutawney Area Education Association Monday, but was eventually reminded about violating possible confidentiality agreements.

Monday, board member Jack White asked about ongoing negotiations with the PAEA regarding the salary structure. Board President Gary Conrad said he would permit White to speak, but noted the possible confidentiality issues.

County’s homelessness prevention program sees cut in funding

BROOKVILLE — Jefferson County’s Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) received disappointing news to begin 2012.

HPRP, which is under the direction of Community Action Inc., recently received a funding cut of $10,000.

According to HPRP Director Susan McLaughlin, the action, which was handed down from the state Department of Community & Economic Development, caused the necessity of a budget revision to ensure funds are available to provide service and assistance to only those already approved and enrolled in the program.
