PASR renews, recognizes during spring dinner

BROCKWAY — Renewal and recognition were the underlying themes of the spring banquet of the Jefferson County chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR). Members gathered at the St. Tobias Church hall in Brockway May 23 as part of the ongoing commemoration of PASR’s 75th anniversary.

Detour for Margiotti project begins Monday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Summer’s first official roadwork detour begins Monday, when PennDOT will close one lane of Margiotti Bridge for a rehabilitation project.

Southbound traffic on the bridge will be maintained, while northbound traffic will have to travel the detour on Route 119, down Indiana Hill and down West Mahoning Street to North Main Street, Borough Manager Ben White said during Tuesday’s Public Works Committee meeting.

Career Women’s Club names Stacy Volchko its Woman of the Year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Career Women’s Club named Stacy A. Volchko as its 2011-12 Woman of the Year during the group’s Rose Breakfast June 2 at the Elks.

She is the Career Women’s Club’s current president.

In the introduction for the club’s new Woman of the Year, Volchko was described as always striving “to do the right thing in both her personal and professional life; and she demonstrated her leadership abilities early on.”

ZUMBA UNDER THE CANOPY

This group of Zumba-enthusiasts worked on their exercises Tuesday night under the shadow of the canopy that annually covers Memorial Bandstand in Barclay Square. The canopy was erected Monday evening in preparation of the 46th-annual Groundhog Festival, which will be held July 1-7.

Police: Man killed daughters, wife, set fire to residences

INDIANA — A South Mahoning Township man who allegedly killed his two daughters and estranged wife also tried to burn down the two residences in which the murders occurred, police said Monday.

Lewis Beatty, 40, South Mahoning Township, faces three counts of criminal homicide in the deaths of his two daughters, Amanda, 11, and Sara, six, and his estranged wife, Christine Beatty, 33, Friday.

Rural Valley man killed while defending family; daughter shoots gunman

INDIANA — The district attorney is calling the victim in an early morning shooting a hero for defending his family, even though he lost his life.

"In many ways, (he) is a hero," Indiana County District Attorney Pat Dougherty said during a Monday news conference at the PSP-Indiana barracks. "He was defending his family. I believe that if he
had not been there, we would have had the possibility of more victims on our hands."

DA: Domestic violence at root of homicides

INDIANA — The Indiana County district attorney said two separate incidents in which four people lost their lives over the weekend can be attributed to domestic violence.

"Indiana County was rocked this weekend by domestic violence deaths," Indiana County District Attorney Pat Dougherty said during a news conference Monday at the PSP-Indiana barracks.

"Too often, we treat things like this as something that
just happens," he said. "We see now, it's not just something that happens."

Police: Smicksburg man, 32, charged in fatal shooting

NORTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP — A 32-year-old Smicksburg man has been charged with criminal homicide for allegedly fatally shooting his estranged father-in-law, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police and the Indiana County Coroner’s office.

Shaun C. Fairman was also charged with aggravated assault and a firearms violation in the death of Richard E. Shotts, 55, Rural Valley, police reported.

Despite rainy weekend, pool still draws crowd

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As Alice Cooper said many years ago "School’s out for the summer." When translated, that lyric also means: The pool is open and ready for sunbathers and swimmers alike.

The George C. Brown Community Pool unofficially kicked off summer Saturday, as it opened its doors for the first day of swimming, said Jeff Overly, co-manager of the pool with Adrienne Goss.

Overly said that pool regulars will find that there is a new entrance to the pool this year located by the concession stand.

No serious injuries in Route 119 two-car crash

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — There were no serious injuries reported in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 1:10 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Snyder Hill Road and Route 119 by Wal-Mart, Young Township.
