Always be prepared

Area first responders participated in a mass casualty drill Saturday behind Smith Hauling in Oliveberg. In the mock crash, a school bus, car and sprayer truck were involved in a three-vehicle accident that involved toxic chemicals. Central, Lindsey, Oliver, Perry, Summerville, Knox and McCalmont fire companies, along with Jefferson County EMS, Summerville Ambulance and StatMedeVac participated in the drill, which was hosted by Oliver Township Volunteer Fire Company and Jefferson County Emergency Services.

An Aged Man Ends His Life Through Sickness and Despondency

James Buckley, a coal miner at Shawmut, committed suicide by hanging on Sunday morning. He had been in poor health for a year or more, and it is thought became despondent over his condition and while in that frame of mind ended his life.

Bass season opens; licenses up, anglers expected to surge, too

BELL TOWNSHIP — With license sales up 11 percent from last year, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) expects the state’s most popular bass fishing spots to see a surge in use as the season kicks off today.

According to Rick Vlazak, Jefferson County waterways conservation officer, as of midnight Friday, it became legal to catch and keep largemouth and smallmouth bass in Pennsylvania, as long as they are 12 inches long, unlike trout season.

Guild’s summer show to entertain whole family

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Two of the most popular figures in children’s literature, Mr. Frog and Mr. Toad, will come to life with all of their woodland friends when the Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Guild presents “A Year with Frog and Toad.”  

The Tony-nominated musical will be staged at the Punxustawney Area Middle School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. June 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30. A special family matinee has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 24.

Board shoots down proposal to hike costs for athletic events

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite looking for ways to chip away at expenses in its budget, Monday, the Punxsutawney Area School Board defeated a motion on a recommendation from its Athletic Committee to raise admission fees for sporting events.

The board approved Penny Pifer’s recommendation to award bids for fall/winter sports, but defeated a motion to increase ticket prices for admission to athletic events with a 5-4 vote.

FLAG DAY MUSIC

VFW Post 9044 changed up its annual Flag Day observance in a number of ways Thursday evening at the War Memorial. First of all, the American Legion Montgomery Post 17 Band, under the direction of Captain Jack Averill, performed a number of patriotic and concert band standards, such as pieces by Irving Berlin, Robert Smith and George Cannon, as well as two pieces, “God of Our Fathers” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” in tribute to Post 9044’s late past commander, James Soliday.

SUMMER: TIME TO READ!

More than 100 youngsters and family member visited the Punxsutawney Memorial Library Wednesday for a party to kick off the annual summer reading program, this year titled, “Dream Big, Read!” They also enjoyed snacks, crafts, face-painting and visits with alpacas from Rainbow Mountain Alpacas. Formula change for baby, mother care concerns hospital

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Serving as the only provider of obstetrical care in the county, Punxsutawney Area Hospital officials are concerned about a decision by the state Department of Public Welfare (DPW) that could threaten the service.

DPW recently changed its formula for reimbursing hospitals for the care of mothers and their babies.

Until May 1, the state paid an average of $5,712 for the mother’s care and $1,155 for the baby’s care for families on medical assistance.

White: Borough must certify levee or face flood plain tag

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council has been given a choice to either pay for a study to re-certify the Mahoning Creek flood levee, or have much of the borough classified as a flood plain by the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA).

“If we don’t get the levee certified to the current federal standards, FEMA will decertify the dike as if it doesn’t exist,” said Borough Manager Ben White.

Commission mum on state budget predictions

BROOKVILLE — Although the state budget is due to be completed June 30, Jefferson County Commissioners were hesitant to offer comments during Tuesday’s county commission meeting.

Commissioner Jim McIntyre said it’s “too premature” to make a comment; however, they are urging support of the $27.65 million proposed Senate Bill 1466.

The spending plan restores around $500 million in cuts to education, social services and other areas.

Chairman Paul Corbin said the commissioners have been encouraged to e-mail, phone or send a letter to Gov. Tom Corbett, urging support of the new bill.
