MCDONALD’S EMPLOYEES LEND A HELPING HAND FOR PRIDE

Lending a helping hand to the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce and PRIDE was the goal of the day last week, as two employees from McDonald's, owned by Gene Puskash, spent their work day recently installing the scare crows on the parking meters downtown and assisting with the cleanup of the beds surrounding the trees along the sidewalk in downtown Punxsutawney. Shown cleaning up weeds and end of the season flowers are Bill Love (left), from the Brookville McDonald's, and Loni Rodabaugh (right), from the Punxsy McDonald's.

Hall of Fame committee seeking Class of 2013 nominations

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame Committee is asking for nominations of former athletes in the Punxsutawney Area School District to be considered for induction with the next class.

JOC approves HVAC, plumbing/heating programs

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP — The Jeff Tech Operating Committee (JOC) voted to approve HVAC and plumbing and heating as the new courses to be added to replace the lumbering and marketing/retailing course programs which were eliminated back in May.

"I've checked with other vo-tech schools around the state which said don't make the testing in these programs separate, combine the plumbing and heating with HVAC," said Marsha Welsh, director of Jeff Tech at Monday's meeting that was held in the Health Assisting Area.

'Just me doing nails:' Grisso living out lifelong dream with her own shop

ANITA – Many would say that it's a lifelong dream to one day be their own boss and do exactly what they've always loved doing. Jamie Grisso, former California resident and current Anita resident, is among those. And now, she can say she's living that dream.

Last week, Grisso started her own business – Atlantis Nail Spa – at 258 Main St. in Anita, right beside the post office.

Grisso said that her journey to the Punxsutawney area had no set plan, and that she just sort of ended up here.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On Jan. 1, Australian Tom Denniss officially set out on the first leg of a journey that literally no man or woman has ever completed – running around the world, and doing so following the Guinness Book of World Records' guidelines – and nearly 10 months later, his journey carried him through the Weather Capital of the World.

Historical & Genealogical Society honors residents; Appolonia thanks Punxsy for its service, both past and present

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Terry Appolonia, dean of the IUP-Punxsutawney campus, was the presenter at Saturday's annual banquet held by the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society at the Lattimer House in Punxsutawney, and Appolonia spoke quite highly of the community's involvement in the education outside the classroom that the first-year students who attend college here in town receive.

Prior to Appolonia's presentation, the society opened its doors early for guests of the banquet to tour the existing Civil War exhibit and to earn a sneak preview of the upcoming seating exhibit.

JOC discusses moving CDL course to former lumbering building

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP — The Jeff Tech Operating Committee (JOC) continued its discussion regarding the possibility of moving the Commerical Drivers License (CDL) course from the main campus to the former lumbering building, now known as the annex.

The committee had held its June and August meetings at the former lumbering building, which has been vacant since that program was discontinued at the end of the 2011-12 school year and is located on Arm Street, a distance from the main school property on Vo-Tech Road.

At several recent social events and meetings, members of the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) have been celebrating the organization's 75th anniversary by collecting paper goods, personal hygiene items and laundry products for use in the shelters operated by the Jefferson-Clarion County Community Action, Inc.'s Crossroads Projects.

VFW ceremony honors former commander, commemorates POW/MIAs

BIG RUN — Big Run Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9044 and the Ladies Auxiliary hosted an event on Saturday at the Big Run War Memorial to recognize National POW/MIA Recognition Day, as well as to commemorate the life of a fellow veteran: James E. Soliday.

In so doing, VFW unveiled a display dedicated to Soliday, which will now stand as a permanent fixture in the Big Run War Memorial.

"Jim Soliday was a man of action," said Post Commander James Pallone in his welcome address, "and tonight, Post 9044 looks at its missing comrade as 'missing in action.'"

State police, PennDOT check child passenger seats for safety

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — “Too loose” is the way troopers from Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police describe the No. 1 problem when parents and care givers install child passenger safety seats in their vehicles.

State police and PennDOT joined together to hold free child passenger safety seat checkups last week, as both agencies marked National Child Passenger Safety Week.
