Groundhog Festival starts Sunday morning

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The 46th-annual Groundhog Festival will get underway Sunday morning in Barclay Square.

“I can always remember which anniversary it is, because it’s the same number as the Super Bowl,” said Roger Steele, Groundhog Festival Committee chairperson. “We’re the summer Super Bowl festival, because we’re the same age.”

This summer, however, committee members prepared for the week-long event with heavy hearts, following the passing of long-time committee member Ursula Albino.

Free concert tonight with Ridin’ Shotgun

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the first time, the Punxsutawney Fire Department’s Old Home Week Committee will welcome a free concert by country-rock band Ridin’ Shotgun, which will perform at 7 p.m. tonight at the carnival grounds behind the west side of the Punxy Plaza.

The band has been together for five years and performed at various functions throughout the Punxsy area.

According to guitarist Ray “Poke” Long, last year, the group opened for The Clarks at the Dayton Fair, and has performed on the local club scene, at the Reynoldsville Street Fair and the Farmers’ Market in Punxsy.

Rotary Recognition

Thursday, the Punxsutawney Rotary Club gathered at the country club to recognize special award-winners, to welcome incoming officers and thank outgoing officers, and to celebrate its accomplishments over the past few months.

Board OKs $38.6M budget

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board approved the 2012-13 general fund budget with no tax increase at Wednesday’s voting meeting.

The board voted 6-1 to approve the $38,650,241 budget, with board President Gary Conrad, Vice-President Francis J. Molinaro and board members Lesa Conner, Jim Baun, Melissa Snyder and Roberta Dinsmore voting yes, and Jack White voting no.

Board members Penny Pifer and Bob Pascuzzo were excused from Wednesday’s meeting.

Firefighters, J&J welcome Arc campers to carnival

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There were some happy campers at the Punxsutawney’s Fire Department’s Old Home Week carnival grounds Wednesday morning, as a group from Camp Friendship ate food and rode rides at the annual free event.

Every summer during Old Home Week, the fire department and J&J Amusements open the midway up and allow the campers — who range from age six up to 44 years of age — to ride the rides and eat for free, said April Barrick, co-director of Camp Friendship’s Punxsy Camp.

Counties join forces for enhancing 911 switching system

BROOKVILLE — To save taxpayer money and provide better 911 service, eight area counties have formed a cooperative arrangement that will bring about a new 911 switching system.

Tuesday, the Jefferson County commissioners entered into an intergovernmental cooperation agreement for the establishment of the Northern Tier Regional Telecommunications Project with Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties for establishing and maintaining emergency 911 telephone systems within the territorial units of the participating counties.

Punxsy alumni ready to strike up the band — again

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The first weekend of July will see — and hear — more music this summer, even after the conclusion of the Groundhog Festival.

This summer, former members of any instrumental group from Punxsutawney Area High School are invited to take part in the first-ever PHS Alumni Band, with a rehearsal scheduled for Saturday, July 7, and a performance Sunday, July 8.

PASR volunteers saved county $630,812

BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) presented a mock check to the county commissioners during the June 26 meeting.

The check, in the amount of $630,812, represented the amount of money school retirees saved the county through the 29,532 hours members volunteered last year in a wide variety of civic, non-profit and charitable organizations.
