Mekos making most of nice weather, earn GOTM honors

GASKILL TOWNSHIP — Even though summer is coming to a close, the home of Mike and Helen Meko on Jackson Run Road in Gaskill Township continues to be a showplace, as it has been chosen as the final 2012 Garden of the Month by the Punxsutawney Garden Club.

Helen said she is the landscaping designer, and Mike is the worker who brings her visions to life.

"We've been doing landscaping all of our lives," Mike said, adding that they have obtained many of their ideas from their extensive travels.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Some people may jokingly say you're dizzy — an indication that you are scatterbrained — but in reality, dizziness can be a very serious malady that can cause people to lose much of their mobility.

Dr. Timothy C. Hain, MD, of Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago Ill., and the Vestibular Disorders Association, wrote that benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common disorder of the inner ear’s vestibular system, which is a vital part of maintaining balance.

Gaining a new perspective: Sunday's Airport Awareness Day offers new view of town

BELL TOWNSHIP — If you would like to rise to a higher plane, then you'll have that chance Sunday when the 14th annual Airport Awareness Day will be held at the Punxsutawney Municipal Airport in Bell Township.

"The purpose of this special day is to increase the public's awareness as to how the airport is a benefit to the community," said Larry Straitiff, who operates a flight school at the airport.

Sraitiff said the airport authority wants people to become aware of the high amount of usage that takes place at the airport.

BARCLAY BED & BREAKFAST HOSTS MIXER

Thursday afternoon, the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a business networking event — a Chamber mixer — at the Barclay Bed & Breakfast, located on E. Union Street behind Barclay Square.

A representative of the OnDemand Energy company was on hand to answer questions about the Chamber's electricity savings program, and attendees had the chance to win a $50 Punxsutawney Gift Check.

BODY PULLED FROM CLOE LAKE LATE WEDNESDAY EVENING

Two Punxsutawney firefighters, Paul Pape (left) and Tony Runco (right), are shown taking the Stokes basket to the recovery site to aid in the retrieval of the body of a man who was found dead in Cloe Lake Wednesday. The Punxsutawney Fire Department boat was used in the recovery of the victim near the breast of the dam. Members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department's Water Rescue Team responded to the rescue call at 8:42 p.m. Wednesday at Cloe Lake in Bell Township.

To radar, or not to radar: That is the question Big Run Council is discussing

BIG RUN — Big Run Borough Mayor Joe Buterbaugh encouraged Big Run Borough Council to support the repeal of the state law that prohibits local police to use radar at a recent meeting.

Buterbaugh said if the state law regarding the non-use of radar by local police was repealed, he could possibly have the sheriff's department help with the speeding problem on Main Street in Big Run.

"Pennsylvania is the only state in the union that does not permit municipal police departments to use radar to clock speeders," he said.

Community Action announces results of homeless survey in Jefferson County

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Community Action, Inc. recently received results from a survey conducted on Aug. 15 of unsheltered homeless individuals in the county.

Overall, the results were as follows:

• Eight individuals identified as being unsheltered homeless in accordance with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) definition.

PAHS to crown Homecoming royalty during Friday’s game against A-C Valley

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The senior class at PAHS chose six senior girls to be on the Homecoming Queen's Court.

This year’s court includes Chelsea Engeholm, Sydney Weaver, Caroline Dunkel, Mary Sloniger, Alexa Shaffer and Sydney Dubensky.

The senior girl with the highest number of votes will be crowned queen, and the girl with the second highest number of votes will be crowned princess at Friday’s Homecoming football game against A-C Valley.

Chelsea Ann Engeholm is the daughter of Ron and Janet Engeholm of Punxsutawney. She is enrolled in the academic curriculum at PAHS.

Sprankle handed 8 to 29 years for attempted homicide

BROOKVILLE — A Reynoldsville woman was sentenced to eight to 29 years in state prison after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted criminal homicide — one count each against her ex-husband and his girlfriend — along with other charges in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, the shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, when Judy Sprankle fired six shots from a .22 caliber revolver at Elmer

IUP-PUNXSY DOING ITS PART IN VOTING EFFORT

Monday and Tuesday, students, staff and volunteers at the IUP-Punxsy campus did their part to help out their community and the community of Punxsutawney by holding a voters’ registration drive.

Monday, 96 voters were registered, with four absentee ballot applications filled and a few party changes, event coordinator Carol Asamoah said.
