The Rivalry Returns

The Brookville-Punxsy football rivalry is back in full force for the 2012 season. Pictured here are (from left) Brookville Chief of Police Ken Dworek, Brookville Mayor Chip Wonderling, Punxsy Mayor Jim Wehrle and Punxsy Chief of Police Tom Fedigan, posing around the Route 36 trophy that will be awarded to the winner of tonight’s rivalry game between the Chucks and the Raiders. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jack F. LaMarca Stadium in Punxsutawney.

Richards Expressive boasts new location

Showing off their new location are Michelle (left) and Sami (right) Richards owners of Richards Expressive Styles. The consignment and retail store has moved from its former location in the Grace Place Community Center to 230 West Mahoning St. Sami said the family-owned store deals in name brand clothing, which is sold on consignment for resale. Michelle said all of the clothing is in good condition. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. For more information call 249-1966. High-speed accident sends 3 to hospital

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A one-vehicle accident at 4:56 p.m. Wednesday afternoon on Cliff Street sent the three passengers to the hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Michael Ritz, was traveling west on Cliff Street at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the roadway, striking a tree with his vehicle coming to rest shortly thereafter.

Eddie James preparing to ‘invade’ Punxsy

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A grieving family and community will rally around a special concert to be held Friday evening in Barclay Square.

Eddie James Ministries team will be performing, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday in Barclay Square to honor the three teens who were killed in an automobile accident last fall.

Drinda Smith, the mother of one of the teens that was killed in the crash, said there's a conflict with the Brookville and Punxsutawney high school football game that is scheduled for 7 p.m Friday.

Punxsy man injured in motor scooter accident

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A Punxsutawney man sustained abdominal injuries when his motor scooter crashed into the guardrail at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on Chestnut Street.

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, George Grist of Punxsutawney was traveling on Chestnut Street when he apparently lost control of his scooter and struck a guardrail.

Police said the scooter ran along the guardrail a few feet before coming to rest.

According to police, Grist was transported by Jefferson County EMS to Punxsutawney Area Hospital and was flown by STAT MedEvac to an area trauma center with abdominal injuries.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you were out driving during the day on Tuesday, you might have noticed the large black-and-yellow buses were out picking up and dropping off kids, as the first student day of classes in the Punxsutawney area began.

Everything went pretty well for the first day of classes in the Punxsutawney Area School District, said Dr. Keith Wolfe, district superintendent.

Wolfe said there weren’t any issues on the buses on Tuesday morning.

Friend’s fine flowers earn Garden of the Month honors

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite the damage caused to area gardens by the many severe storms experienced this summer, Shawnee Friend's garden on Freas Lane continues to shine and was chosen as the August “Garden of the Month" by the Punxsutawney Garden Club this past week.

"I've been planting flowers pretty much since we moved in here 29 years ago," Friend said, adding that her home was built by former owners Dan and Diane Anderson.

"This property was all woods when we moved in; there was no lawn to speak of," she said.

Woman airlifted Sunday following motorcycle accident involving deer

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — A passenger on a motorcycle was flown to an area trauma center by a STAT MedEvac helicopter following an accident involving a deer at 7:11 p.m. Sunday on Route 436 near Femco Machine.

According to fire and police scanner reports, the motorcycle struck the deer, causing an injury to a female passenger, while the male operator suffered minor injuries.

Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by Punxsutawney Borough Police, Jefferson County EMS and members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department.

Comcast looking to offer low-cost Internet access, computers to qualifying students

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A cable and Internet provider hopes to bridge the digital divide for students in the Punxsutawney Area School District by offering low-cost Internet access to parents.

Comcast, the nation’s largest Internet service provider, launched the newly redesigned online “Learning Center” on its Internet Essentials website, www.InternetEssentials.com/Learning, said Robert Grove, Comcast public relations director for the Keystone region.
