PASR names Jeanne Curtis its Volunteer of the Year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In recognition of the more than 2,000 hours she has devoted to a variety of organizations and projects in the past twelve months, Jeanne Curtis of Punxsutawney has been chosen as the Volunteer of the Year by the Community Service Committee of the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR).

Spirit closing at 3 p.m. Monday; no paper Tuesday

In observance of the Christmas holiday, The Spirit office will be closing at 3 p.m. today.

The office will be closed Christmas Day, and there will be no paper.

Regular office hours will resume at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The ‘Rumors’ are true: Tavern closed — for now

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you're a regular at Rumors Tavern on West Mahoning Street in Punxsutawney you've probably been wondering why they don't answer the phone anymore on "Taco Tuesday" — or any day of the week?

The reason is simple: It's because the restaurant has closed due to the Saw Mill

Run bridge replacement project. However, a new Rumors building is being constructed just yards away.

Council president recounts 2012, thanks workers, public

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a reflection on 2012, Punxsutawney Borough Council President Larry Chenoga thanked borough employees and his fellow council members for helping to make his first year as president a success.

Chenoga had been on council for seven years prior to being elected president in January.

"The president oversees and handles a variety of issues that the other members don't deal with," Chenoga said, adding that he keeps his fellow council members informed of any issues that he deals with as president.

Sunday’s ‘Milk Can Jam’ to benefit local food banks, World Hunger Relief

PUNXSUTAWNEY — We are "down to the wire" as far as Christmas shopping is concerned, while the band Down to the Wire is just getting wound up with the annual "Milk Can Jam" to be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Punxsutawney Eagles.

"We are celebrating 25 years of the classic Down to the Wire band consisting of Dom Catanzarito, bass; Joe Serian, lead vocals; Kevin Cielo, keyboard and vocals; and myself, guitars," said Matt Taladay, spokesperson for Down to the Wire.

Taladay said that Brian Rowan will be the drummer for the band on Sunday, but was not part of the original band.

Slick roads cause overnight accident on Graffius Ave. ext.

This vehicle driven by Tyler Kuntz of Punxsutawney was traveling on Graffius Avenue Extension in Bell Township at 12:55 a.m. Friday, when Kuntz lost control on the snow-covered roadway and slid into a ditch, causing extensive damage to his vehicle.

Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by the Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company, McCalmont Towship Volunteer Fire Company with Quick Response Service (QRS), Jefferson County EMS and Rebuck's South Side Service.

No further information was available at Spirit press time.

Wolfe talks school security, safety in wake of Newtown, Conn., tragedy

PUNXSUTAWNEY — You never stop thinking about protecting the students, faculty and staff from danger, not just when a tragedy happens such as the shootings in Newtown, Conn., said Dr. Keith Wolfe, Punxsutawney Area School District superintendent.

The fatal shooting of 20 children and six adults has caught the attention of school administrators around the world, with them asking if this could happen in their district at one of their schools?

Long’s Christmas Village lights up her house and her life this time of year

It started 29 years ago with a little ceramic cottage made by her then-16 year-old-daughter.

That cottage would mark the beginning of a lifelong Christmas project for Judy Long of Home, Pa.

After receiving that cottage from her daughter, she began to buy other cottages to sit beside it. What started as something small, soon grew into what she refers to as her Christmas Village.

After moving to Pennsylvania, Long purchased a larger cottage to add to her collection. With each year, 
her passion for collecting cottages grew.

Rally in Brookville raises awareness of animal cruelty in Jefferson County

BROOKVILLE — When members of the Willow Run Sanctuary for Animals in Coolspring found Angel, a terrier mix, she was "very, very bony, just a walking little skeleton," said Margo Stefanic, the founder and president of the organization.

Stefanic said the dog was "very unhealthy" and seriously malnourished, a description that was backed up by a veterinarian after she was discovered. Angel had been left restrained in the backyard of her former owner's residence in Rose Township, where she had not been given water or food.
