Mayor asking public to send holiday greetings to troops, donate to Wounded Warriors

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As the countdown to Christmas continues, Punxsutawney Mayor James Wehrle is asking area residents to send greetings to servicemen and women who are stationed overseas during the holiday season.

Wehrle said he has a supply of composition books, in which people can write holiday greetings, set up next to the Punxsutawney Borough Council
Chambers in the Mahoning East Civic Center this week.

"People can write well wishes, holiday greetings or anything they want in the books to the troops, no matter where they're stationed," he said.

Lighting up the season

The first weekend of the 20th-anniversary performance of the Living Christmas Tree put on by the First Church of God in Punxsutawney was performed in front of large crowds over the weekend.

The musical "Changed By a Baby Boy" will continue next weekend.

Call the church at 938-6670 to inquire about free tickets that may be left for the remaining performances.

BOOTING UP FOR FOOD BANKS

Members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department had their boots in hand over the weekend during the 29th-annual fire department boot drive to collect donations for area food banks and individual food baskets.

The total amount collected will be announced later today.

Local veterans recognize Pearl Harbor anniversary

BIG RUN — VFW Post 9044 of Big Run and the Ladies’ Auxiliary held a ceremony commemorating Pearl Harbor Day — an annual recognition of the Dec. 7 attack by the Japanese that led to American involvement in World War II — on Friday, the 71st anniversary of the event, at the Big Run War Memorial.

The main speaker for the evening was VFW Post Chaplain Gene McKee, who is a veteran of World War II and also delivered the invocation and benediction for the event.

Reynoldsville Area Business Association names Jackie Stitt Citizen of the Year

REYNOLDSVILLE — The Reynoldsville Area Business Association bestowed its Citizen of the Year award upon local resident Jackie Stitt at the organization’s Eighth Annual Holiday Gala at the Bellamauro Social Hall this past Sunday.

It also distributed two college scholarships and recognized a retiring community businessperson before the afternoon was over.

DAR MEMBERS HELP TIE OTHERS TO HERITAGE

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Volunteer Field Genealogists, along with junior member Santana “Tana” Olp, presented a workshop on Dec. 1 in Titusville, Pa.

Instruction was given on the proper preparation of applications, accepted proof documents and suggested resources and methods of proving a Revolutionary War patriot.

A PowerPoint presentation gave participants an overview of how to use the public DAR website to find a Revolutionary War Patriot.

Make-A-Wish Annual Light Up a Child’s Life Campaign hits the airwaves Monday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It just wouldn’t feel like the Christmas season in Punxsutawney without the magic of Make-A-Wish in the air.

Make-A-Wish invites the members of the local community to help give the gift of a wish-come-true to a local child with a life-threatening medical condition this week, as it kicks off its Annual Light Up A Child’s Life holiday campaign.

Monday through Friday, Make-A-Wish will be doing live radio broadcasts from remote locations around the area.

Back to the boot: Firefighters to collect for local food banks this weekend

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department will have their boots in hand from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend at major intersections throughout town for the 29th annual fire department boot drive to collect donations for area food banks and individual food baskets.

Boot drive collections will take place in front of the Lindsey Fire Hall, West Mahoning; Central Fire Hall, East Mahoning, Hampton Avenue and Front Street intersection; and Elk Run Fire Company, at the intersection of Elk Run and Graffius avenues.
