Jefferson County to recognize National Mentoring Month throughout January

BROOKVILLE — Jefferson County will participate in the nationwide observance of National Mentoring Month through the rest of January, the county commissioners proclaimed at their meeting on Wednesday.

The purpose of the recognition is to raise awareness and find additional participants for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and others like it.
Heidi Stahlnecker, the program coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County, represented the organization before the commissioners on Wednesday.

IT’S A BOY! PAH WELCOMES NEW YEAR’S BABY

Congratulations to Jenna Peace on the birth of her son Brantley Peace, who was announced as the first baby born in 2013 at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Brantley, who was brought into this world at 11:49 p.m. Jan. 1 by Dr. Emil Dib, weighed 7 pounds and was 19-3/4 inches long.

2013 Groundhog Banquet tickets available Thursday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tickets for the Groundhog Club’s Annual Groundhog Banquet will go on sale Thursday at the Groundhog Club, located at 102 West Mahoning St.

Tickets are available at the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club for $25 each.

In addition to normal business hours, tickets will also be sold Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. They will be available during normal business hours through the week until they are sold out.

This year’s banquet will be held Feb. 1, at 6:30 p.m. and will take place at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

PAEA, superintendent contracts approved by Punxsy School Board

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board approved a new contract with the Punxsutawney Area Education Association (PAEA) and a new five-year pact with Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe at Tuesday's board meeting.

The contract with PAEA was approved in a 6-3 vote with Gary Conrad, board president; Lesa Conner, Bob Pascuzzo, Penny Pifer, Melissa Snyder and Roberta Dinsmore, board members, voting yes.

Francis Molinaro, board vice president; and Jack White and Jim Baun, board members, voted no.

The King rocks The Foundry for benefit

The king of rock‘n’roll was back on Friday night, at The Foundry in Reynoldsville. The Foundry was home to “Tribute to Elvis, with Bugs Bayer” for the evening.

Bayer performed a number of old Elvis classics including "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Burning Love."

The proceeds from the event benefited The Foundry and the Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging.

PSP budget cuts to affect Groundhog Day security

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Budget cuts will prevent Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police from assisting Punxsutawney Borough Police with Groundhog Day security.

"We've had a number of meetings about this, and state police will not be able to provide manpower for the Groundhog Day, Saturday, Feb. 2 security detail this year," said Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan at Monday's Punxsutawney Borough Council Public Safety committee meeting.

"It's quite a hardship to fill 20 to 30 spots that have been manned by state police troopers," he said.

2013 Little Mr. & Miss Groundhog submissions now being accepted

It's again time for the "Little Mr. & Miss Groundhog" contest, which benefits the Weather Discovery Center.

All kindergarten children attending Punxsutawney Area schools, SS.C.D. and the Punxsutawney Christian School are eligible. Submit a photo (no larger than 5" x 7") with the child's name, age, address and phone number on the back by Thursday, Jan. 17.

Voting will run from Saturday, Jan. 19, until Tuesday, Jan. 29.

A diverse selection: Library offers exciting opportunities for visitors of all ages

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the cold winter months upon us, many like to sit down with a good book and catch up on some reading.

Those at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library are keeping warm and staying busy by offering some new and exciting programs this winter for both kids and adults.

Starting Jan. 8, the library will begin offering not only literacy classes but also the Winter Reading Program known as the Tentative-Elementary Fun Program.

The Winter Reading Program is for kids in grades K-6 and will be held every Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon, beginning the week after Groundhog Day.

CELEBRATING A YEAR OF GRACE: Apartment complex marks one-year milestone

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was a celebration — albeit a small one — as the first anniversary of the opening of Grace Place Apartments at the corner of Pine and North Gilpin streets took place Friday.

The income-based apartment complex officially opened for business Dec. 16, 2011, as the ribbon was cut by a host of dignitaries on that cold December day.
