Significant damage reported in overnight Ellsworth Ave. shed fire

PUNXSUTAWNEY — All three Punxsutawney fire companies were called to a structure fire involving a shed located at 302 Ellsworth Ave. in Punxsutawney.

The shed sustained $3,000 to $4,000 in damage when it caught fire at 12:16 a.m. Tuesday.

"The fire was knocked down when I arrived on scene," said Bryan Smith, Punxsutawney Fire Department chief.

Smith said the fire burned a spot through the wall and a hole in the floor of the shed, which housed two four wheelers and numerous tools.

Some big things cooking at IUP Academy of Culinary arts

PUNXSUTAWNEY — What are four first-year, first-semester culinary students doing entering a timed cooking competition that pitted them against some of the most recognizable industry names in the nation?

Bringing home a bronze medal, that's what.

Jan. 10 and 11, Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts students Bradley Drake, 31, John Mink, 26, J'aime Abramowitz, 28, and Megan Kauffman, 21 — a Punxsy native — competed in the Skidmore College ACF Sanctioned Culinary Competition at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Time running out to pick up your Groundhog Ball tickets

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Inner Circle’s Groundhog Ball is quickly approaching, and the Groundhog Club would like to remind patrons that tickets are still on sale.

The dance is scheduled for Saturday, with doors opening at 8:30 p.m. and live entertainment by Rudy and the Professionals kicking off at 9 p.m. and running through 1 a.m.

Tickets are available for this formal event at The Groundhog Club, 102 W. Mahoning St., or online at www.grounghog.org.

Tickets cost $30 and include hors d’oeuvres.

A cash bar will also be available.

Passing of the torch: Chambers succeeds Lester as clerk of session after following him on bench

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was the end of an era at the Presbyterian Church in Punxsutawney, as the longtime clerk of the session, Guy Lester, passed the torch to his successor Doug Chambers on Sunday.

Lester, who had been the magisterial judge in Punxsutawney, has held the position of clerk of session for the Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years and has been a stabilizing force during times of transition, said the Rev. Brett Swanson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Punxsutawney.

"Guy is a committed servant, which comes along once a generation for this kind of church," he said.

Big Run Council OKs free use of War Memorial to Big Run-based non-profits

BIG RUN — Big Run Borough Council voted to rent the Big Run War Memorial for free to non-profit organizations that are based in Big Run.

Council approved a motion to allow Big Run-based non-profit organizations to use the Big Run War Memorial rent-free for a one-day-only event, such as meetings, said Nick Lantz, Big Run Borough
Council president.

Lantz said the groups that are included in the motion for using the building for free are: Big Run VFW, winter/summer recreation programs, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and the Beta Sorority.

Jeff Tech students excel at SkillsUSA competitions

On Monday, Jeff Tech hosted nine District SkillsUSA competitions.

Clearfield CCTC was the main hosting school for the year, so most of the students from Jeff Tech went there to compete.

However, Jeff Tech played host to the competitions for automotive service technology, building maintenance technology, commercial baking, crime scene investigation, criminal justice, customer service, precision machining and technical drafting.

Punxsy Borough Police Year in Review: Crime and Commendations

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Drugs and alcohol are increasingly becoming the basis behind many crimes that have been committed during the past year in Punxsutawney, according to Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan, who recently released the department’s 2012 statistics.

In 2012, the Punxsutawney Borough Police received 1,145 calls at its dispatch center, said Fedigan.

He said out of those 1,145 calls, 250 were emergency calls to which police officers had to respond immediately.

Fedigan said his department is seeing major increases in psychiatric and mental health calls.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center is pleased to announce Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel® as its 2013 inductee into the Meteorologist Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will take place on Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. in the lobby of the Weather Center on North Findley Street.

Cantore is one of the most recognized faces in weather. Whether it's in the middle of an ice storm, tornado activity or a Category 5 hurricane, there is no place Jim Cantore would rather be.

Deadline to enter Groundhog weekend Woodchuck Whittle Competition is Sunday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A few years back, a Woodchuck Whittle Competition was part of the Groundhog Day festivities here in town, and this year, it is trying to make a comeback!

The Groundhog Club is looking for participants to join the competition, and the deadline is quickly approaching.

The actual competition will take place on Feb. 3 at the Punxsutawney Community Center gymnasium, with set up running from 8 to 9 a.m. and the show taking place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The actual judging will take place at noon.
