25 PAHS students inducted into National Honor Society

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Thursday night, the National Honor Society inducted new members with 25 Punxsutawney Area High School students being recognized.

The program began at 7 p.m. with an introduction by High School Principal David London.

The public was then introduced to the National Honor Society advisors, who received a thank-you for all their help.

National Honor Society advisors include Dr. Keith Wolfe, superintendent; David London, PAHS principal; Darren Hack, assistant principal; and Russell Bishop and Josh Conrad, teachers.

MAKE-A-WISH TO ‘LIGHT UP’ LAST DAY OF ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

The fourth day of the Make-a-Wish "Light up a Child's Life" campaign brought the organization closer to reaching its goal.

Thursday morning from 7 to 9 a.m., the campaign once again teamed up with WPXZ and reached out to the listeners, as well as students of the Punxsutawney Area High School and Middle School.

At 9 a.m., the Wish crew settled in at the Pantall Hotel. Al Lockwood, program director of Renda Radio, challenged local businesses to make a pledge and to see which business would donate the most.

Christmas Village free shopping event set for Sunday at Brookville Lanes

BROOKVILLE — The second annual Christmas Village free shopping event will return to Brookville on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Brookville Lanes bowling alley, and opportunities to donate and volunteer are still available for the remainder of the weekend.

The event first appeared in Brookville last year, the brainchild of Brookville Lanes owner Mike Dusch and several other individuals with whom he attended church. The decision was made to hold it at Brookville Lanes because “we have the room,” Dusch said.

Bridge Foundation, PCS host scholarship event

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Over $199,000 in scholarships were announced Wednesday at the Punxsutawney Christian School (PCS) as part of the state’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program.

Lori Galbraith, PCS administrator, welcomed the guests to her school for the presentation of the money to area private and parochial schools through Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) scholarship donations.

Galbraith said PCS is thankful for the Bridge Foundation and its continued support by blessing their families with scholarships.

SS.C.D. lights up Mulberry Square For Make-A-Wish

The SS.C.D. School's children's choir performed for the residents of Mulberry Square in Punxsutawney live on WPXZ radio during the Make-A-Wish Light Up A Child's Life campaign Wednesday. Jessica Newcome, SS.C.D. principal, said the students have held five separate fundraisers for Make-A-Wish "dress down" days which included: Pajama day, sports team day, camouflage day for hunting season and crazy hat day. She said the students also held "penny war days" which was won by the sixth graders, who will receive a pizza party as their reward.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — “There’s no place like home for the holidays.”

The oft-quoted holiday song brings with it a sense of warmth and nostalgia for those who are able to travel the distance, great or small, to be with their families over the holiday season. For soldiers serving our country, whether at home or abroad, the song could stand as a painful reminder that they will not be able to spend the holidays with their families.

Jefferson Co. Commissioners approve 2013 budget, including tax increase

BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County Commissioners reviewed and approved the 2013 county budget at their meeting on Tuesday.

The newly passed budget includes a tax increase.

The budget had been placed on display at the county offices for 21 days prior to the vote.

The tax increase clocks in at one quarter of a mill, which determines tax amounts based on property values.

By way of example, a property valued at $50,000 will now be party to a tax increase of $12.50 for the upcoming year.

Make-A-Wish campaign rolls through Tuesday

The second day of the Make-A-Wish Light Up a Child's Life campaign was highly successful Tuesday, as the two-day total raised now sits at $10,155.43.

Today, the Make-A-Wish crew will broadcast live from 7 to 9 a.m. at Caterina's at its new location in the ATA Transit Center; from the Pantall Hotel from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and from Mulberry Square from 3 to 4 p.m.

Action lingering for alley between McDonald’s and former Hotel

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Solicitor Jay Lundy informed Punxsutawney Borough Council at its Monday meeting that he is still waiting for the paperwork to be completed by the landowners regarding the alley located between the former Punxsy Hotel property and McDonald's.

"The easements have been cleared regarding the property owners, and all of the paperwork is out to them (the Neals) and McDonald's," said Lundy, adding that there are three easements involved in vacating the alley.

Lundy said he hoped that he can have everything completed regarding the petition for the Jan. 14

GPS units official, PRIDE requests funds for new position

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The GPS units that were purchased by Punxsutawney Borough Council have finally arrived and are ready to be installed in all four Punxsutawney Borough Police vehicles.

"Last week, Larry (Chenoga), Punxsutawney Borough Council president, and I completed the agreement with Wireless Matrix," said Tom Fedigan, Punxsutawney Borough Police chief at Monday's council meeting.

Fedigan said all that's left is to set up a time to have the GPS units installed in the four police vehicles.
