Punxsutawney Area Running Club getting off its feet

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Do you enjoy running? Is it something that gives you great enjoyment?

Then, perhaps you might want to consider joining the Punxsutawney Area Running Club.

Alena Gourley said the idea of a running club came from Facebook.

"I am part of a Facebook group where most people are from DuBois, and they post about group runs often, and I had actually driven there to join in.

Last year was the first time I had a running partner and loved how we were able to motivate each other through the dreary winter months," she said.

Animal rights advocate addresses concerns to council

PUNXSUTAWNEY — An animal rights activist asked Punxsutawney Borough Council for help with her passion regarding animal rights and the humane tethering of dogs.

Lynn Porada, a Punxsy resident and animal advocate, said that she came to council on behalf of the animals.

"As everybody knows, winter weather has already hit our area," Porada said. "There are many dogs that are tied up outside, and there are cats who are outside with no shelter."

UPDATE: Pedestrian hit at busy intersection identified

On Wednesday, Punxsutawney Borough Police released the identity of a man struck by a car at the intersection of S. Gilpin and W. Mahoning streets at 1:43 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police said that a 2006 Aerio driven by Andreana Bump of Meadville was traveling west on W. Mahoning Street, then turned left onto S. Gilpin Street behind an unknown vehicle.

Bump failed to see William Stiles Sr. of Punxsutawney, who was in the roadway, and her car struck Stiles on the right front portion.

School board accepts Nichol’s resignation

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On Monday night, members of the Punxsutawney Area School Board officially accepted the resignation of Alan Nichol from the position of head coach of the Chucks’ football squad after six seasons.

Firefighters assist with waterline break at Mulberry Square

Members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department were called to assist with flooding that occurred at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center at 411 West Mahoning St., Punxsutawney, at 9:14 p.m. on Sunday. Firefighters assisted the staff with shutting off the water mains when pipes burst, flooding the one wing. All of the patients in that wing were evacuated to other parts of the facility. No further details were available at Spirit press time. Pictured is Matt Strouse, Punxsutawney Fire Department, helping with moving the large plastic tubs filled with water.

Dog reunited with owner after car accident

CORSICA — One family is rejoicing after finding their beloved dog, Jack, who went missing after being in a violent car crash this past Saturday.

Kendre Verbeck Myers and her dog, Jack, were on their way back to Clarksville, Tennessee when the accident occurred. The accident occurred at mile marker 73 on I-80 west.

"My jeep rolled three times from the westbound lane to the eastbound lane," Myers said.

A terrified Jack fled the scene and went missing.

I-80 West closed due to Clarion County crash

January 7, 2015

I-80 West is closed at mile marker 65 due to a multiple vehicle crash which is being reported as a fatal accident from multiple news sources.

Traffic is being transferred off of I-80 West at Exit 70 – Strattanville to SR 322 West to Clarion.

More information will be forthcoming.

If motorists do encounter snow squalls while traveling, PennDOT offers this advice:

-- Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions.

-- Turn on your headlights.

-- Stay in your lane.

-- Increase your following distance.
