2015 budget for borough includes tax increase

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council voted to place their proposed 2015 budget on display with a tax increase included at a special meeting that was held on Wednesday.

Members of council voted 6-0 to increase borough taxes 1.5 mills.

"The cost of everything is going up," said Punxsutawney Borough Council President Larry Chenoga, adding that this is the first tax increase since 2007. "It was either cut services or increase taxes, so we went with raising taxes."

Chenoga said that “not one member of council who sit on this side of the table wanted to raise taxes.”

Warm Hearts, Warm Hands program reaches out to local kids

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the cold winter now upon us, Community Action, Inc. Senior Corps-RSVP Program volunteers have been busy knitting and crocheting mittens and scarves for area youngsters.

Formed in 1990, the Warm Hearts, Warm Hands Project was created by the Community Action, Inc. Senior Corps RSVP Program.

Jefferson County EMS receives GCU donation

The Greek Catholic Union (GCU) of the USA recently donated the proceeds from a stuffed cabbage dinner to Jefferson County EMS. DuBois City Police report charges in statutory sexual assault of juvenile

DUBOIS — The DuBois City Police provided an update on a statutory sexual assault of a 13-year-old female that occurred on July 8 in the City of DuBois.

While on patrol in the early hours of July 8, the DuBois City Police came into contact with a 13-year-old female who was intoxicated and being assisted with walking home by two other individuals. While investigating the incident further, police found that the juvenile female had sexual contact with a 19-year-old male.

Tunes for Tots back at it again; Auction to be held Saturday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With Thanksgiving around the corner and Christmas just a few weeks away, those with the Tunes for Tots Committee are working hard to make sure that less fortunate children in the area will have presents this year.

To benefit these children, the committee will be having its 4th annual Tunes for Tots & Auction, which will be held at 6 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Punxsutawney Eagles.

The event will feature eight acoustic bands and a silent auction until 9:30 p.m.

Local couple celebrates 70 years

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Love often happens when you least expect it.

For some couples, love begins as early as junior high. For others, it happens a bit later. Love can happen unexpectedly, and for one couple who are celebrating their 70th anniversary today, that was the case.

Snuffy (Eugene) and Jean Smith have been married for 70 years, and during those 70 years, they have had their share of ups and downs, but their love for one another and love for the Lord has gotten them through it.

SS.C.D. students treated to Flag Program

November 14, 2014

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The third-grade students in Mrs. Myers’ class at SS.C.D. were visited by John and Marge Frantz, who did a special Flag Program in honor of Veterans Day this week.

John, an Army veteran, is currently a member of the Jefferson County Veterans Honor Guard. He is a member of the American Legion Post 62.
