PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was a night to remember Friday for the members of the Punxsutawney Area High School Class of 2014, as they and their families were greeted by clear skies and sunshine at Jack LaMarca Stadium for the graduation ceremony.

PASR recognizes Foulkrod as Volunteer of the Year

Lee Grace Foulkrod received a special certificate from Tom Curry, president of the Jefferson County Chapter of PASR, designating her as Volunteer of the Year for 2013.

A resident of Sykesville, where she coordinates programs and activities at the town's Senior Center, she is also the director of the Village Voices choir of Brockway.

Foulkrod devotes many volunteer hours to her church and other community organizations in Sykesville.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Gloria Kerr is a familiar face. You may recognize her as the president of the Garden Club. Or perhaps you have seen her and the rest of the Garden Club working hard around the community, planting and doing beautification projects.

Punxsy area elementary schools receive accolades

At Wednesday night's school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe said that two elementary schools in the Punxsy District have received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Academics — Bell Township and Longview.

Both schools scored over 90 percent for the 2012-2013 school profile.

Each building received a proclamation from the governor.

Past to Present Machinery Association holds Farm Show

The Past to Present Machinery Association held its annual show over the weekend at the Sykesville Fairgrounds.

Over three days, tractors and equipment both old and new were out on the grounds, alongside a number of other farm-related displays.

Activities included tractor pulls for farm tractors, garden tractors and antique tractors, a pedal tractor pull, tractor games and a parade of tractors, as well as music by The Moore Brothers.

Eagles, police, fire department chip in to make Punxsutawney a safer place for kids

The Punxsutawney Eagles and Auxiliary hosted Child Safety Day Saturday to benefit the children and parents in the area. Members of Pennsylvania State Police Troop C checked car seats to make sure they were properly installed. Punxsutawney Borough Police offered fingerprinting, and the Punxsutawney Fire Department demonstrated fire prevention and gave tours of the department's apparatus. Community Guidance Center holds open house at new office located in Community Health Center

The Community Guidance Center held an open house last week inside Primary Health Network’s new Punxsutawney Community Health Center. First same-sex marriage ceremony performed in Jefferson County

Roger Fye (right) and William Schlagel (center) are Jefferson County's first legally recognized same-sex couple, after being married by Judge John Foradora in a ceremony at the Jefferson County Courthouse on Tuesday.

Same-sex marriages have been recognized in Pennsylvania since May 20, when U.S. District Court Judge John E. Jones III ruled that the state's statutory ban was unconstitutional.

Schlagel and Fye have known one another for five years and have been partners for two.

Fye is a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, while Schlagel is originally from the Pittsburgh area.

New lifeguard chairs being donated in memory of former Punxsy lifeguard

Pamela Boyer (left) and her family raised money in memory of Boyer’s son, Philip, to replace the lifeguard chairs at the George C. Brown Community Pool, and the new chairs will be dedicated at a ceremony on May 31 — the first day the pool will be open for the year. Pictured with Boyer is SPLASH representative Lisa Switlick.
