A banner year: Chucks earn D-IX title

On Friday evening, the members of the Punxsy Chucks boys’ basketball team took to the hardwood of Tippin Gymnasium at Clarion University for the District IX title game as the favorites over the Clearfield Bison.

Clearfield kept things interesting in the first half, but a strong second-half effort by the Chucks put things away, as they cruised to a 54-35 win to earn the title of District IX Champions. Members of the team and coaching staff are pictured here after the game with their medals and team trophy.

Celebrity designer Angelo Surmelis visits Miller Brothers to open new collection

FALLS CREEK — Miller Brothers Furniture in Falls Creek recently opened a new collection of furniture and home decor products belonging to the angelo:HOME line designed by Angelo Surmelis, and as part of the grand opening, Surmelis himself stopped by the store to meet with guests.

Surmelis is a celebrity designer known for starring in HGTV's "Rate My Space with Angelo Surmelis" and "24 Hour Design," as well as TLC's "Clean Sweep."

Breaking News: Dayton teen, 15, missing

DAYTON — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are searching for a missing 15-year-old Dayton teen.

Daniel Frank Jablonski was last seen Tuesday in the Punxsutawney Borough.

Jablonski is described as a white male, 5-feet-9-inches tall, 130 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

He was wearing a blue-and-white striped shirt, blue jeans, a black hoodie and a green Philadelphia Eagles hat.

SS.C.D. hosting Bingo Blast

SS.C.D. School will be hosting its annual Bingo Blast event on Sunday, with doors opening for lunch at noon and Bingo beginning at 1 p.m.

There will be 16 vendors set up, and a $15 entry fee includes both lunch and Bingo.

All proceeds benefit the SS.C.D. School.

And the ‘weight’ goes on: School board members see some progress in fitness center project

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The new fitness center being constructed at Punxsutawney Area High School has been a topic of discussion for some time now, and the Punxsutawney Area School Board learned at Wednesday's
committee meeting that the project is getting closer to completion.

Francis J. Molinaro, board vice president, asked what is left to be completed and said that he was tired of seeing the project on the board's agenda month after month.

Courtois showcases award-winning sculptures for JOC

Chris Courtois is pictured with sculptures that won two awards during the Punxsutawney Groundhog Day Metal Sculpture Competition in Barclay Square.

Courtois, along with students of the Jeff Tech Welding/Fabrication program and John Smelko, also created the sculptures.

Commission hears from Dog Law Enforcement Office

Representatives of the Department of Agriculture's Dog Law Enforcement Office visited the county commissioners on Tuesday to raise awareness of the need for dog licensing.

Central firefighters respond to Route 36 car fire; none injured

An engine fire destroyed a vehicle that was parked along Route 36 across from Pine Tree Road in Bell Township at 11:32 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Punxsutawney Central Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire that engulfed the engine compartment of a red Toyota, and the smoke from it could be seen up to a mile away.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they doused the flames.

The vehicle was severely damaged.

Punxsutawney Fire Department Chief Josh Wachob escorted the driver to Wachob’s own vehicle while the fire was extinguished to get him out of the cold.

Breaking News: Police bust Brookville meth lab

KNOX TOWNSHIP — A 42-year-old Brookville man is in custody and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine following a Tuesday search of his Manor Lane residence in Brookville, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.
