June 19th

Sometimes you can find support in the unlikeliest places and for one
courageous woman battling cancer, she found it at McDonald's. Marsha Elkin is currently in remission from a third battle with cancer. While stopping in at McDonald’s, she met up with a group of people who soon became not only friends but also a wonderful support group. Those friends are hosting a spaghetti benefit dinner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the McCalmont Township Fire Hall in Anita. Pictured are Bob Black, Carol Gaston, Randy Redding and Elkin. June 18th
The summer reading program at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library officially kicked off Monday afternoon. Children gathered on the second floor of the library, where they were able to enjoy a magic show by M&M Magic. After the magic show, parents and children went through registration, and each child received a name tag. In order to attend the closing party on Aug. 6, each child must read a total of 10 books.
June 17th
Out in the Punxsutawney countryside is a hidden little gem, just right off Route 36, called H.C.'s Last Stop.
A quaint little restaurant with a breathtaking view, it is owned and operated by 27-year-old Cassi Greenawalt. The restaurant celebrated its first anniversary on June 12.

An oversize load truck from Midland was traveling north hauling equipment on the Bells Mills/Cloe Road and tried to turn left onto Route 119, when the trailer ran out of clearance and got stuck, nearly blocking the entire road at 6:44 p.m. Monday in Bell Township.
Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company, who directed traffic until the scene was cleared.
No further information was available at Spirit press time.
Members of the Groundhog Festival Committee and other volunteers assisted with the raising of the new canopy from start to finish on Monday evening in Barclay Square.
The canopy will be used for the festival, Music in the Park and many other events.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — At last Monday's Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting, the Route 119 Elk Run Bridge Project was discussed, and PennDOT announced Monday that the project's largest detour will take effect this morning.
Beginning Tuesday, at 5:30 a.m., Route 119 will close to traffic between Jenks Avenue and Route 310, a release issued by Deborah Casadei, PennDOT District 10's public information and safety press officer said.
The release said the road closure will be in place until late September.
June 16th
The Free Lunch Program is underway once again for the summer.
Any child up to 18 years of age is welcome to come in and eat lunch for free from 11 a.m. to 1 p..m. Monday through Friday, now through Aug. 21, at the PAHS cafeteria.

It may have been a bit chilly Saturday evening, but that didn't stop those from the Walston community and surrounding area from coming out to see fireworks sponsored by the Walston Club through the Walston Playground, where they were set off.
Members of the Walston Club said that the fireworks were being set off for the St. Anthony's weekend.
Carey Pyrotechnic artists were in charge of the fireworks.

Last Sunday, about fifty members of the order of Maccabees assembled in their lodge rooms, and at 10:45 o'clock marched to the Baptist church where they occupied seats in a body.
