One severely injured in Coolspring wreck

COOLSPRING — A Worthville man suffered major injuries when his pickup truck was struck by a flatbed truck as he attempted to cross the intersection of Coolspring Road and Route 36 at 10:55 a.m. Friday in Coolspring, Oliver Township.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Larry Harp, 64, of Worthville, came to a posted stop sign at the intersection of Coolspring Road and Route 36, and Harp was attempting to drive straight across Route 36 onto River Road.

Suspects sought in Punxsy Walmart theft

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a theft that occurred at Walmart around 9:15 a.m. Friday, when two males were observed on the store's video surveillance system possessing and/or concealing several items.

The items include two DualShock PlayStation 3 wireless controllers; two PlayStation 3 ONN charging cables; a Bear Grylls Gerber knife; and a knife and scissors sharpener.

Police said the total amount in stolen goods is $182.97.

The suspects were at the scene in a black, four-door sedan with a hood scoop.

Armed robbery attempt in DuBois

DUBOIS — Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery that occurred Friday at the W. Scribner Avenue S&T Bank — four days after an armed robbery occurred at the same location.

DuBois City Police said a male entered the bank at 2:37 p.m. Friday, displayed a handgun and demanded cash, but fled prior to receiving any.

Also, police said a similar call was reported at a business in the Sandy Plaza at 3:47 p.m. Friday.

The actor at the bank was last seen on W. Fir Alley heading toward High Street.

Rep. Smith awarded for service to community

BROOKVILLE — State representative and Speaker of the House Sam Smith received the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO) Community Service Award on Friday, recognizing his work in Jefferson County and abroad.

Dr. Louis "Skip" Nichamin, M.D., the medical director of the Laurel Eye Clinic and the Laurel Laser & Surgery Center, who nominated Smith for the award and presented it to him at the organization's Brookville establishment, said he did so because of the doctors' responses to interaction with patients in the community.

50 years after receiving a gift, Lantz still giving his gift — music — back to Punxsy

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Everyone has a story to tell, but for one local man, his story wouldn't be complete without the generosity of one town — Punxsutawney.

Residing in this very town is a man who has achieved a great many goals despite being partially blind.

Ray Lantz was born on Aug. 21, 1946, to Robert and Rachel Lantz. He was born with congenital cataracts, which left him completely blind.

Taught to walk with assistance from a collie dog, he received his first operation at 2-1/2 years of age on his right eye.

Sheriff’s office releases its end-of-year report

BROOKVILLE — During the fiscal year 2012, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office performed numerous duties and support to the communities of Jefferson County and issued the following report:

The office continues to operate and conduct a busy schedule with a small but well-trained professional staff of deputies and administrative staff. With an increase in some duties performed by the office, the Sheriff’s 
Office was able to increase the number of full-time deputies to seven.

After 17 years, Baughman hands Oliver Township Fire Chief reins to Coleman

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Being a volunteer fire chief is a very difficult job, but being a chief in a rural fire department can be even tougher.

Just ask Bruce Baughman, who is retiring as the chief of the Oliver Township Volunteer Fire Company, Jefferson County Station No. 5, following 17 years at the helm.

Baughman said he first joined the fire company in 1987 — a year after Oliver Township Volunteer Fire Company was formed.

Punxsy’s Sam Smith elected to second term as House Speaker

HARRISBURG — Rep. Sam Smith (R-Jefferson/Indiana/Armstrong) was elected Tuesday to his second term as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The unanimous vote was taken during the official convening of the 197th Session of the House, where 201 duly elected legislators took the oath of office.

During his address to the members and guests assembled on the House floor,
Smith talked about the meaning of liberty and freedom.

Nominations sought for Man & Woman of the Year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Nominations are currently being accepted for Man of the Year and Woman of the Year, honors that are presented annually at the Groundhog Banquet.

Nomination criteria and applications are available at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library, the Chamber of Commerce and the office of the Punxsutawney Spirit.

The application is also available on the home page of punxsutawney.com.

The deadline for nominations for both the Man and Woman of the Year is Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Nominations should be submitted to the Chamber of Commerce, 102 West Mahoning St.
