PSP-DuBois investigating Thursday death of Reynoldsville boy

REYNOLDSVILLE — DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death of a two-and-a-half-year-old Reynoldsville boy stemming from an incident that took place on Grant Street Extension in the Reynoldsville Borough at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Police are being assisted in the investigation by the Reynoldsville Ambulance Service, the Reynoldsville Police Department, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office and the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

The investigation is ongoing.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With Groundhog Day just around the corner, Punxsutawney Phil's Souvenir Shop is offering some new and exciting items.

Punxsy Phil fans can check out either the souvenir shop or the online shop at GroundhogStuff.com, which offers the same souvenirs but at a convenience for those unable to travel. The online store has been operating since 2000.

There he is again! Elvis spotted at Mulberry Square

There’s been another Elvis sighting in the area! Thursday night, the residents of Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center enjoyed a wonderful performance by Elvis impersonator Scott Allegretto.

Allegretto is a Weedville resident who has been performing as an Elvis impersonator for five years.

His award-winning Elvis tribute captured the attention of the weekly series "We are Central PA Live."

Allegretto had the chance to perform on the show this past Tuesday, which also happened to be Elvis' birthday.

Concerned parent raises safety questions; school board assures community meeting, safety measures are priorities

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Discussions continued at Tuesday's Punxsutawney Area School Board meeting in regard to holding a community meeting with the school board and Punxsutawney Borough Council regarding school safety.

Tina Smith of Punxsutawney addressed the board during the two-minute comment section regarding school safety.

Smith said she is not a confrontational type of person or a public speaker, nor does she like to participate in a public debate. But, she said, the topic she wanted to discuss should be a concern for all
parents.

PTAG dresses to impress at first Chamber mixer of 2013

The Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Guild held its 2013 Chamber Mixer Thursday night at Caterina's Cafe.

This event marks the 38th season that the Guild has been active in Punxsutawney.

The mixer featured a variety of community and business patrons who stopped by to show their support.

Those in attendance enjoyed not only some great food, but also some good company in members of the Guild who came dressed in costume.

Members of the Guild provided details for upcoming shows and some history on how the group came to be.

GPS units up and running in borough police cars

PUNXSUTAWNEY — You may remember the old television series from the 1960s “Car 54 Where are You?," a comedy about two New York City police officers Gunther Toody and Frances Muldoon, who were always getting lost.

What the dispatchers back then needed was Global Positioning System (GPS) units, which weren't invented as of yet, to locate the
wayward officers.

Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan announced at this week’s Public Safety meeting that the GPS units purchased by the borough have been installed in all of the borough's police vehicles.

PSP responds, promises sufficient manpower for Groundhog Day detail

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In regards to the report that Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) would not be providing security detail for Groundhog Day, Maria Finn, press secretary for the Office of the Commissioner of Homeland Security, PSP, would like to clarify that PSP will have a presence at the event.

Ice comes on fast, causes numerous accidents

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Police were warning motorists to stay off the roads and closed others for several hours after a brief spell of rain froze on roadways and led to crashes throughout the Jefferson County and Western Pennsylvania area Wednesday morning.

In Punxsutawney Borough the icy road conditions caused three accidents at approximately 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Jefferson County to recognize National Mentoring Month throughout January

BROOKVILLE — Jefferson County will participate in the nationwide observance of National Mentoring Month through the rest of January, the county commissioners proclaimed at their meeting on Wednesday.

The purpose of the recognition is to raise awareness and find additional participants for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and others like it.
Heidi Stahlnecker, the program coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County, represented the organization before the commissioners on Wednesday.

Congratulations to Jenna Peace on the birth of her son Brantley Peace, who was announced as the first baby born in 2013 at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Brantley, who was brought into this world at 11:49 p.m. Jan. 1 by Dr. Emil Dib, weighed 7 pounds and was 19-3/4 inches long.
