FOCUSING ON THE COMMUNITY

Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday came an act of goodwill that will help out many in the community.

Thursday evening, Jeff Kuntz, chairman of the Community Focus Committee, presented checks to four individuals accepting on behalf of the organizations they represent.

Checks are distributed throughout the year through the Punxsutawney Education System to give money to organizations from which students benefit.

SS.C.D. preparing for Christmas Bazaar

SS.C.D. will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

One hundred vendors will be set up and selling a variety of Christmas items.

Homemade sandwiches, vegetable soup and fresh-baked pies will also be available.

A nativity donated by Pam and Pat Defelice — in memory of their daughter, the late Brielle Nicole Defelice — will be raffled off.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Mary Mack is a recognizable face. You may recognize her as a former teacher in the Punxsutawney Area School District, or perhaps you have seen her participating in events throughout the community.

Write-in votes tallied, Scarantine edges Conrad for school board seat

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The election results for the super-tight Punxsutawney Area School Region III (McCalmont & Young Townships) school board director race were certified by the Jefferson County Board of Elections on Wednesday, with challenger Jim Scarantine defeating incumbent Punxsutawney Area School Board President Gary Conrad.

Big Run residents say dredging is a necessity

BIG RUN — A group of Big Run residents spoke at Monday's Big Run Borough Council meeting and complained of the island in the stream, which allegedly has grown due to a lack of dredging in the creek over the years and has led to flooding in the lower end of the borough any time a major rain storm occurs.

BREAKING NEWS:Lees Jr. waives right to preliminary hearing

November 20, 2013

Kenneth Lees Jr. waived his right to a preliminary hearing at District Judge David Inzana's office this morning.

Lees Jr. is charged with simple assault, fleeing and eluding, recklessly endangering another person or persons and a variety of traffic offenses for his alleged involvement in events surrounding a late September shooting in Brockway that wounded PSP-DuBois trooper Brad Wilson.

Making wishes come true in 3D

The Punxsutawney Make-A-Wish Radiothon "The Light Up a Child's Life Campaign” will be coming up the week of Dec. 16 on 104.1 FM WPXZ.

Leading up to that week, The Spirit will be telling more Wish Kid stories, and coverage of the event will also be available in The Spirit.

Knights of Columbus generosity brings warmth to area kids

Brookville Knights of Columbus Council 3966 recently donated 24 winter coats to boys and girls in Jefferson County.

Shown here are John Palmer (left) and Ron Battaglia (right) of the Knights of Columbus giving the coats to Bethany Lindemuth of the Jefferson County Children and Youth Services Advisory Board.
