Brake fire spurs fire alarm, none injured

August 5, 2013

This tow truck owned by South Side Service caught fire Monday when the rear brakes overheated and caught the brake drum, and then the tire, on fire.

The fire was extinguished by the Central Fire Department at the former location for C&S Restaurant in Bell Township.

There were no injuries.

Council discusses bridge schedules, future traffic options

PUNXSUTAWNEY— The PennDOT bridge projects in Elk Run and West End were discussed at Monday's Punxsy Council Public Safety Committee meeting.

Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager, said work continues on the two bridges — one on Route 119 in Elk Run and the other at Sawmill Run in the West End.

Punxsy dive crew assists with Susquehanna River recovery

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department dive team and boat crew were on scene for over 12 hours, as they helped to search for the victim of a drowning that occurred late Sunday night at the Susquehanna River near Shawville in Clearfield County.

SS.C.D. Festival wraps up after another fun year

The final night of the SS.C.D. Lawn Festival brought out a massive crowd Sunday, as many enjoyed food, games and entertainment.

Frank Hetrick (with microphone) announces the winner — Dorothy Hunt of DuBois — of a 2013 Chevy Cruze LTZ RS or $18,000 cash.

Hunt wasn’t present Sunday night.

Terra Parise-Frye (right) picked the winning ticket.

Get ‘em while they’re hot! Hot Dog Days return to town next week

Members of the Punxsutawney Memorial Library Board of Trustees would like to remind everyone that Library Hot Dog Days will be held once again this year, beginning Monday and running through Friday at Fezell's County Market.

A lunch of a hot dog, a bag of chips and a soft drink will be available for $2, with all proceeds going to the library.

State Rep. Sam Smith discusses effects of flooding in Reynoldsville

REYNOLDSVILLE — A full month has passed since the last of late June's floodwaters subsided, but many parts of Jefferson County and the surrounding area are still struggling with the aftereffects: particularly Reynoldsville, which was one of the boroughs hit especially hard during the incident.

On Friday, State Rep. and Speaker of the House Sam Smith met with public officials and community members from the Borough of Reynoldsville to answer questions and address concerns.

A magical night at SS.C.D.

It was the perfect night for some magic, and those who attended the SS.C.D. Lawn Festival Friday were treated to just that by magician Little Richard Quick.

Before starting his act, Quick made balloon animals for those in the audience.

The festival runs through Sunday evening.

around town.

You may recognize him from The Medicine Shoppe, where he greets everyone who comes through the door with a smile.

It was a polka party in the park!

Polka was the word Thursday night in Barclay Square as the latest installment of Music in the Park featured polka band Mikey D.
