Pedersen, joined by Carmody, returns to town for session on grieving

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The grieving process is certainly one that can carry on for many years after the loss of a loved one.

It never really, completely goes away, but through the healing power in the process, one can seek comfort in knowing he or she is not alone.

One local woman, Chris Gigliotti, has learned the healing power of grief. In 2009, she suffered the tragic loss of her beloved son, Adam Travis.

Gigliotti said that after his death, she spent a lot of time struggling and searching for "something" to help her deal with that loss.

Weather Discovery Center receives EITC donation through Verizon

On Friday, Verizon presented a check for $5,000 to the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center (PWDC) as part of the 2013 Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program.

Through the recommendation of Pennsylvania State Rep. Sam Smith, Verizon is proud to partner with PWDC to support programs that empower young people with lifelong learning skills.

Rotary honors Spirit employees

Spirit employees Lisa Ross (left) and Bridey Shawgo were recently honored by the Punxsutawney Rotary Club with Distinguished Service Citations for their work in composing and producing the Punxsutawney Spirit insert for the annual radio auction and several other Rotary projects.

In receiving the award, Ross and Shawgo were recognized and thanked for working tirelessly "behind the scenes" and doing a great job in support of the Rotary endeavors.

The point of the project will be to highlight a member of the community who may be recognizable to many and tell his or her story. Today’s familiar face is Erin Cameron.)

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When it comes to recognizable faces, you may recognize Erin Cameron, owner of Creative Garden Child Care Center. You may also recognize her for her work in the community.

Born and raised in Punxsutawney, Cameron is a 1997 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.

Punxsutawney Concert Association to present first concert of 2013-2014 Season

PUNXSUATWNEY — For its 2013-2014 season, the Punxsutawney Concert Association will present its first concert to subscribers and the public on Wednesday, Sept. 18, with the appearance of The Gothard Sisters at the Punxsutawney Area Senior High School. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

Family of Punxsy veteran KIA in Vietnam re-opens history through comrade’s connection

(Editor's Note: In this piece submitted by Peggy Anthony, the Punxsy woman details a bit more of the history of her nephew, Private Thomas W. Steele, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.

Steele's remains were returned to Pennsylvania in 2005 and buried with his mother in the Perry Memorial Cemetery in Frostburg. His name is on the Vietnam Monument in Barclay Square.

Council urges pedestrians to exercise safety precautions when walking on dark streets

PUNXSUTAWNEY — At Monday's meeting, Borough Council discussed pedestrian safety after recent complaints about persons walking down McHugh Avenue in dark clothing on the wrong side of the road.

Borough Council and Punxsutawney Borough Police are asking all pedestrians to use caution when walking at night.

Pedestrians, the council and the police said, are asked to wear light-colored clothing, so that they may be seen by approaching vehicles. They are also asked to walk facing traffic.

Just for Jesus looks to establish Kids Against Hunger satellite in Jefferson County

BROCKWAY — The Just for Jesus Challenge Homeless Outreach Ministry, which operates facilities in Brockway and Brookville, has recently expanded its services with the addition of a few new programs designed for guests of the shelter to have the opportunity to give back to their communities, including plans to become the second satellite of Kids Against Hunger in Pennsylvania.
