Gobbler’s Knob Trail to enhance educational aspect of Punxsy’s greatest attraction

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club announced Wednesday that an educational and informational trail will be the newest addition to come to Gobbler’s Knob. The club received a matching grant from the Jefferson County Hotel Tax Committee to help assist with this project.

This is a project to help promote Punxsutawney Phil and Groundhog Day and to increase the amount of time spent in our community by visitors, the club said. Those visitors will be able to learn about our town’s fascinating history, as well as see a famous landmark at Gobbler’s Knob.

Board approves hire of additional biology teacher

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board voted 6-2 to hire an additional high school biology teacher, but not before the need for an additional teacher was debated between board members and the administration at Tuesday's voting meeting.

Groundhog Club, Jefferson Co. EMS honored for largest CPR lesson

Members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, along with Jefferson County EMS, received an award that recognized them for being the largest group to learn CPR on Groundhog Day this past year.

Ridgway man killed in one-car McCalmont Township accident

MCCALMONT TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police have reported a fatal accident that occurred at 7:40 a.m. on Monday on State Route 310, near Wayne Storage in McCalmont Township.

Police said that William James Duffield, 37, Ridgway, was driving his 2002 GMC Envoy north on State Route 310, and as he was traveling out of the village of Panic, he was negotiating a left curve in the roadway and lost control of his vehicle.

Spirit donates baby contest proceeds to Expecting You

County’s next Take Back Drug Day set for Oct. 26

BROOKVILLE — The next Take Back Drug Day will take place at various locations in Jefferson County from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct.
26, Donna Cooper, solid waste/recycling coordinator, announced at the most recent meeting of the Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority.

The locations in Jefferson County where unwanted drugs will be collected include the Jefferson County Courthouse in Brookville, Brockway Drug, Lindsey Fire Station in Punxsutawney and McCabe's Drug Store in Reynoldsville.

Cooper said she would probably put up a recycling display at one of the locations.

Animal cruelty incident leaves one dog injured, another missing

NORTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating an incident of animal cruelty that occurred between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13, along Route 119 north in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County.

According to police, during the above time, a known individual left a male shepherd mix named Cherokee and a male miniature pincher named Duke out of fenced areas in an attempt to deprive the owner, Lawrence August of Punxsutawney, of his dogs.

Cherokee was located Sept. 16, on Mt. Tabor Road, east of Blairsville, Indiana County.

Rep. Smith issues statement on Brockway shooting

PUNXSUTAWNEY - House Speaker Sam Smith (R-Jefferson/Indiana/Armstrong) issued the following statement relative to the incident that occurred Thursday in Brockway resulting in the wounding of Trooper Bradley Wilson.

While serving a warrant, Trooper Wilson was severely injured. A standoff followed and the suspect, Kenneth Lee Sr., was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His son, Kenneth Lee Jr., is currently in custody, and the investigation into the incident continues.
