Sara Evans to bring her talents, her Christmas cheer to PACC

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the Christmas season looming ahead and Christmas decorations already on store shelves, Christmas carols are just
around the corner.

Knowing that is the case, you may be looking for a concert to get your vocal chords warmed up for the season. If that is so, mark your calendars for the Sara Evans Concert, which will be held on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Punxsutawney Area Community Center (PACC).

Gabrielle Giffords intern gives presentation at Penn State DuBois

DUBOIS — As part of its programming associated with National Coming Out Day and Hispanic Heritage Month, Penn State University invited author, speaker and activist Daniel Hernandez to speak on campus on Wednesday.

Hernandez was a congressional intern in the office of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords during the deadly Tucson, Ariz., shooting in January 2011. He has been credited with having saved her life during the
attack.

Punxsy Borough leaf pick-up schedule

October 18, 2013

The borough's annual fall leaf collection program will begin this Monday, Oct. 21, and will continue through November.

The schedule will be as follows:
• Monday — East End;
• Tuesday — Elk Run and Park Avenue area;
• Wednesday — Middletown and Findley to Center Street;
• Thursday — Church Street and Indiana Street;
• Friday — West End and South Side.

Changes to this schedule could occur due to weather and/or the amount of leaves to be picked up.

Leaves should be raked to the curb next to the road, but not raked onto the roadway. Do not park on or near piles of raked leaves.

Familiar Faces Friday! Tom Chelgren

The point of the project will be to highlight a member of the community who may be recognizable to many and tell his or her story. Today’s familiar face is Tom Chelgren.)

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tom Chelgren is a recognizable face around town. He may be most recognizable as a former sergeant for the Pennsylvania State Police, or perhaps, you have seen him throughout the community involved in one of his many activities.

GUILD COMEDY VISITS TOWN OF ‘GREATER TUNA’

Seven actors will bring 22 characters to life in the uproariously funny satire, “Greater Tuna.”

Appearing in the Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Guild’s concluding play of the season are (front, from left) Laura Chelgren, Loretta Ball, Jennifer Soliday (director); (back) S. Thomas Curry, Terry A. Fye, Ilona Ball and Doug Fye.

The show will be staged at 7:30 nightly in the Punxsutawney Area Middle School auditorium on Oct. 25 and 26, and Nov. 1 and 2.

Former Spirit publisher Bill Anderson remembered by those who knew him on different fronts

PITTSBURGH — On Tuesday, former Spirit Publisher William C. "Bill" Anderson died at the age of 62.

One girl killed, three others injured in one-car accident

CHEST TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY — One juvenile female was killed and three others were injured in a one-vehicle accident that occurred on State Route 3006 (Westover Road) in Chest Township, Clearfield County at 3:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police reported.

The crash took place when a 2003 Ford F-250 was traveling south on Westover Road at a high rate of speed, the report said. The truck crossed over into the northbound lane of travel and proceeded to leave the roadway.

Council discusses FEMA deficiencies, Punxsy could be deemed a flood plain

This tree located by the George C. Brown Community Pool is allegedly on the easement of the United States Army Corps of Engineers and must be removed for the flood control to receive a passing grade from FEMA and for Punxsy to not be declared a flood plain.

West End Elementary students learn fire safety from Central Fire Department

The students at West End Elementary School viewed a presentation on fire prevention during Fire Prevention Week, courtesy of members from the Punxsutawney Central Fire Department.

Pictured are the winners from each grade in the West End fundraiser. The the winners were rewarded by being allowed to ride in a fire truck to Pizza Hut in Punxsutawney.
