Big Run VFW holds ceremony to commemorate POW/MIA Day

Jim Uplinger conducts the POW/MIA table ceremony at the Big Run VFW POW/MIA Day ceremony held Friday at the Big Run War Memorial.

Each item on the table symbolizes a different aspect of the life of a soldier who is or was a prisoner of war or missing in action.

The big steam roller which cost the borough 3,000 rouleaus, lawful money of merchants, came last Friday, and was put to work.

Two men came with it to instruct the local engineers as to its habits and eccentricities.

A farewell to a family known for flowers

After 41 years of serving the community of Punxsutawney, Roseman's Florist and Gifts is bidding farewell to its former owners, who are pictured here: (from left) Diane Lellock, Beverly Lingenfelter and Debbie Parise, who have decided to retire.

However, as one chapter ends, another begins, with new owners Mark and Bobbi Young taking over ownership with well wishes from the Roseman family.

The new owners will keep the name Roseman's Florist and Gifts, as well as the phone number.

Transportation Committee proposes changes to district’s bus riding policies

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board Transportation Committee considered proposed changes regarding student safety for the school bus each rides at Thursday's meeting.

Cheryl Repik, district transportation director, said what she's proposing would be a significant change in the district transportation system.

Hay bale on road causes two-car accident on Route 36 in Cloe

Punxsutawney Central Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle accident at approximately 8 p.m. Friday on Route 36 in the village of Cloe in Bell Township.

The vehicle pictured above struck a round hay bale — which had fallen off a hay wagon — while traveling west on Route 36.

A second vehicle struck the rear of the first vehicle when it came over into the eastbound lane on Route 36.

Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police were assisted by Jefferson County EMS and South Side Service.

No further information was available at Spirit press time.

Punxsy Phil welcomes Dept. of Community & Economic Development’s Holman

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) stopped by Punxsutawney on Thursday as part of its DCED on the Road initiative.

Clyde "Champ" Holman (right), the deputy secretary for community affairs and development at DCED, visited a number of locations across the state — including, in Jefferson County, Punxsy and Brookville — to meet with constituents and tour finished projects in which DCED had a hand and to hear about projects that are being considered for the future.

BROOKVILLE — As 2013 comes within months of its close and 2014 begins to move in, some of the first provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are starting to slide into place.

As they continue to foster debate and raise questions, health care reform became the topic of the Brookville Area Chamber of Commerce's third Eggs and Issues Breakfast.

DuBois state police report fatal accident on Interstate 80

DUBOIS — DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police reported early Wednesday morning that an Ashtabula, Ohio, man was killed in an accident at the 90.2 milepost on Interstate 80 westbound Tuesday night.

Police said that at 7:04 p.m., a crash occurred as a 2007 Ken-
worth truck pulling a 2009 Trail King trailer, driven by James M. Gilchrist, 35, of Meadville, was stopped on the interstate due to traffic ahead of his unit.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — You've heard of doing something on a wing and a prayer — as in doing something when you're not prepared. But have you heard of doing something on a whim and a prayer? While some would use the two expressions interchangeably, they have very different meanings.

The Punxsutawney Christian Women's Conference started back in 2010 on what one might call the latter — a whim, or arbitrary impulse, and a prayer, or a few of them.
