Motivated by his sister, youngster collects toys for autism

August 21, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Angela Fairman of Punxsutawney recently reported a bit of good news worthy of sharing, as her son, Dan, performed a very kind deed.

Dan's 3-year-old sister, Lauren, was diagnosed with low-functioning autism when she was 18 months old, and the family recently heard about an organization called Toys AUcross America, which collects toys and distributes them to children across the country who have autism.

The charity was started by a father whose child has autism, and the tradition carries on, providing the much-needed sign of caring to others.

On Wednesday, the American Veterans Traveling Tribute memorial wall made its way through Jefferson County, departing DuBois at approximately 3 p.m. and wending through Sykesville, Big Run and Punxsutawney en route to its final destination — the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Brookville. The wall will be on display there through Sunday. Pictured above are the traveling tribute truck (top photo), some of the several hundred motorcycles that accompanied the wall on the trek (bottom left photo) and a military vehicle with a flag waving in the foreground (bottom right photo).
