Punxsy natives join together to start new family tradition

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There are bonds that cannot be broken no matter the distance that separates you.

For the mothers and daughters of one family, that bond has strengthened with time.

Kay DeLuca, of New Orleans, and her sister, Karen Verdill-Gratz, of
Indianapolis, Ind., were born and raised in Punxsutawney.

Though DeLuca comes back once a year to visit their mother, Barbara Verdill, her sister hadn’t been home in three years.

JUST A ‘DUCKY’ DAY AT THE POOL

It was the perfect day to enjoy some free swimming and some entertainment, as the official Duck Derby benefitting SPLASH began at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

More than 500 plastic ducks were dumped into the George C. Brown Pool and had to make their way across the water to the finish line.

Helping them along were a couple of lifeguards and volunteers, as many onlookers crowded around the pool and waited in anticipation to learn the winners.

Sixteen prizes were awarded, with the top prize being $500.

DuBois man charged with aggravated assault after allegedly driving car at woman

REYNOLDSVILLE — A 35-year-old DuBois man has been charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and driving while suspended following an argument with a 36-year-old DuBois woman, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said David V. August and the alleged victim were involved in a verbal argument at 6:45 p.m. Saturday that began in Reynoldsville and continued while they drove along Route 322 and Route 830 in Pine Creek Township.

When August stopped the car on Route 830, police said the woman got out and fled south on the road.
