Police: Punxsy man arrested on numerous forgery, theft charges

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Borough Police Department reported that Steven D. Miller, 18, of Punxsutawney, was charged with forgery (24 counts), identity theft (24 counts), theft by unlawful taking (25 counts),
receiving stolen property (25 counts), criminal conspiracy (45 counts) and theft by deception (24 counts).

Police said the charges stem from a March 19 incident on Belmont Avenue.

Miller was committed to the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of posting $80,000 cash bail.

‘Laughing all the Way’ to a good cause

Tom Curry (left), Ginger Momyer (center) and Kathy Bish paused during rehearsal for "Laughing All the Way," an evening of entertainment being presented this month by the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) and the Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging.

The show benefits PASR's Educational Support Grant and the activities of each hosting senior center. In addition to the light-hearted songs, skits, jokes, a monologue and a most unusual fashion show, audiences will be treated to an assortment of desserts and beverages during intermission.

School board approves preliminary budget

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board voted to approve the preliminary budget for the 2013-14 school year at Monday's voting meeting.

Bob Pascuzzo, board member, asked how much fund balance the district will need to finish the 2012-13 school year.

Susan H. Robertson, district business manager, said as of right now, she has projected $500,000 but believes it will be closer to $300,000 by the end of the school year.

‘Dr. Bob’ treats Parkview Elementary students to veterinary presentation

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Last Friday, the students at Parkview Elementary School were given a special treat, when Dr. Robert Altmeyer, who the students already knew as “Dr. Bob,” and his two helpers — his son Aaron and Therman the dog — delivered a presentation to them on taking care of their pets.

After some brief introductions, Altmeyer showed the students how to do a pet inventory and asked the students what kinds of pets they had.

Prothonotary & Clerk of Courts Office hosting Passport Fair Saturday

BROOKVILLE — Tonya S. Geist has announced that the Jefferson County Prothonotary & Clerk of Courts Office will be hosting a special passport event this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 200 Main St., Brookville.

“The fair is to provide passport information to the citizens and to accept passport applications for persons who may not be accommodated during regular business hours,” Geist said.

U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when entering or re-entering the United States by air.

Garden Club set to Revive town’s beautification projects

The Punxsutawney Garden Club beautification committee continues to plan for the new planting season.

Troubles now in the past, PACC continuing to offer plethora of services to town

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There is good news in downtown Punxsutawney: The Punxsutawney Area Community Center (PACC) continues to grow under the current board of directors after it came perilously close to closing its doors circa August 2009.

"There's been quite a change at PACC regarding our facilities under the current board of directors," said Rob McCoy, PACC director.

McCoy said he's been helping out at the center off and on since 1998.

Public Safety Committee discusses new basketball gear for Harmon Field

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The co-coordinator for the basketball league at Harmon Field put in a request to the Punxsy Borough Council Public Safety Committee for new basketball hoops and poles to help grow the program further.

Aaron Emhoff, one of the directors of the basketball league at Harmon Field, asked the committee if Punxsutawney Borough Council would look into replacing the hoops at Harmon Field.

Longview students throw pajama party at Mahoning Hills Social Center

The senior citizens at the Mahoning Hills Social Center received a visit from some students from the Longview Elementary School recently.

Mrs. Gotwald's first-grade class decided to have a pajama party with the seniors and had the students and seniors wearing their pajamas.

Each student stood up and read from a book of his or her choice.

TRUCK HITS PLEASANT AVENUE HOME

May 5, 2013

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, Gina Smith of Punxsy was driving this green 1995 Chevrolet truck west at 8:34 p.m. on Saturday when she lost control for unknown reasons and struck a Pleasant Avenue house owned by Joseph and Heather Bellomo.

Police said there was a 2007 GMC truck that was parked in the driveway and was damaged by Smith's vehicle when it struck the house.

There was no information available regarding any injuries suffered by Smith.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company, Jefferson County EMS and South Side Service.
