Traffic Tip: Work to start today on Warsaw Bridge on Route 28 in Jefferson County

INDIANA — PennDOT has announced that the Warsaw Bridge on Route 28 in Warsaw Township will be replaced, with work to start today.

Lane restrictions using temporary traffic signals will be in place on Route 28, between Route 473 (Carberry Road) South and Route 473 (Carberry Road) North.

These restrictions will be in place until mid-September.

PennDOT reminds motorists to be alert to changing conditions and to pay attention to flaggers in the work zone.

The project is expected to be completed in May 2014.

Spirit names PAHS, PAMS Teachers of the Year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On Monday, Spirit representatives visited the Punxsutawney Area High School and the middle school to award the Teachers of the Year.

Mayor declares Friday, Saturday Poppy Days

Punxsutawney Mayor Jim Wehrle (left) has proclaimed Friday and Saturday to be American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Days in Punxsutawney.

Members of the John Jacob Fisher American Legion Auxiliary will be distributing poppies at Walmart and County Market from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Proceeds from the Poppy Program are used for veterans’ projects and a scholarship for a daughter or granddaughter of a veteran who needs financial assistance to further her education.

Senior project benefits library

It's the end of the school year, and for one PAHS senior, it’s been a year of working toward a goal that he has finally achieved.

A.J. Carey did his senior project for a place that he holds dear to his heart — the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.

His project consisted of selling $10 Sheetz coupon books with the money raised going to the library.

They have been doing that country with a merry-go-round, the first that ever operated there, and report a very successful venture.

Spaghetti dinner to be held tonight in memory of boy with heart for animals, others

Today, family and friends will host a spaghetti dinner at the Rossiter American Legion from 3 to 8 p.m.

All proceeds from the dinner and auction will go to the family of Ivan Coblentz to help pay for his medical bills.

Members of the Amish community will serve spaghetti, meatballs, rolls, salad, homemade desserts and beverages.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under, with children 2 and under eating free.

Mayor proclaims Saturday ‘Punxsy Polamalu Day’

Today, the “Punxsy Polamalus” will be participating in the McDonald’s Steelers Trivia Contest in Pittsburgh.

Friday, Punxsutawney Mayor James Wehrle issued the following proclamation:

“Whereas Punxsutawney has always had some great trivia teams; whereas Mike Stello has always represented Punxsutawney well;

whereas Bob Long (pictured above, right, with Wehrle) has always represented Punxsutawney well;

whereas Nick Digilarmo has always represented Punxsutawney well;

A perfect day for a yard sale — SS.C.D. style

Its officially yard sale season, and the women of the Catholic Daughters of America were busy getting ready for their annual yard sale that will be held today at the SS.C.D. auditorium.

The yard sale will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 4 p.m.

Various local crews assist with battling Paradise Rd. structure fire

Several local fire companies responded to and provided backup at a late-afternoon structure fire on Paradise Road in Henderson Township on Thursday.

Members of Station 17 in Big Run are pictured here dousing the hot spot on the house.

Personnel remained on scene late into the evening.
